if you use yr phone in any money transactions or just get emails on it you should ditch whatsapp
if you use fb messenger or instagram in conjunction with whatsapp on your phone you are even more open to hacks that can steal your data
Telegram does all the things whatsapp can do but more with none of the risk

Free e-mail account badly needed
I've been using a version of Gmail for many years, which was custom-built for older computer users by someone who's now at AgeUK. After being ultra-reliable, it's just gone wrong, due to a problem with its web server not responding to the hosting provider - and of course there's no easy way to contact the system manager. I've just found out the hard way just how over-fragile the IT support system for that essential e-mail account really is.
I really should have set up a replacement for my old Wanadoo e-mail, when that ceased to be provided in the UK by its final owner but - of course - I didn't get around to it because I already had an apparently reliable e-mail account that I was used to using daily. Ideally, I would get a free webmail account which automatically downloads e-mails to my computer and can collect incoming ones from this Gmail account - when that becomes possible.
What do people recommend for this purpose, please? -
Has anyone had or know anything about "Oneplus 7T "mobile? Opinions please
The storage seems to be amazing, 256gb.

After several years with Plusnet, I really wanted to get away from their appallingly bad administration, so opted for the best value basic broadband/line rental deal that I found using MSE's broadband comparison tool - but NOT the John Lewis one, which is being run by Plusnet.
Has anyone here used Shell Energy Broadband and, if so, is the broadband supply itself good enough for basic purposes? I picked them partly because their contractual documents and website were very clear and easily navigable, unlike the Plusnet ones which had been maddening me for so long. But there were some adverse reviews online, which were rather worrying.... -

Camera facility on mobile 'phone stuck in 'Flash' mode
I've recently had to swap SIM cards in my newish Doro 2404, which may be why its camera facility no longer works. The wretched thing is stuck in 'Flash' mode, so all it offers are flash options, with no way to get back to picture-taking mode at all.
There's no full manual and Doro's website isn't helpful. The manufacturers' suggestion was to "recommend removing the battery and rub this thoroughly on all it sides to remove any static electricity that could be causing this. After reinserting the battery and turning the phone on, if the issue occurs then we would recommend a factory reset."
I've tried removing and wiping down the battery but to no effect. Can't see how to do a factory reset, either.
Can anyone help tackle this problem, please? -
Is it just me (or Three) or is switching mobile provider unexpectedly difficult nowadays?
Having got Virgin to refund my credit some days ago, I began using a new Three SIM today - or so I thought....
But it showed no signal when I inserted it into the 'phone; even when I swapped it with the Virgin SIM that I'd had in the primary slot, only the Virgin one showed any bars. The Three one had not only no bars but a cross indicating that the SIM wasn't live at all. Is it normal for a new SIM to take many hours to become active - or is that peculiar to Three?(The new Virgin mini-SIM that I'd had to insert only two months earlier, to which I didn't immediately shift my account, worked instantly.)
Three claims that signal strength indoors can be variable but I had literally no signal at all. (Surely it's a nonsense to imply that a customer's mobile 'phone needn't work indoors: what about invalids and home emergencies?) And all their 'solutions' seem to be geared to customers with mobile broadband accounts - not PAYG customers like me.
Then I couldn't fund the new SIM card because Three's website claimed that there was an error ("not a valid Three PAYG mobile number") when I carefully transcribed across the 'phone number printed on the SIM pack - even though their system simultaneously displayed a tick against the number box.
Getting and implementing a PAC went OK, although it won't be 'active' until Tuesday - so far, so like changing other sorts of provider - but the old number won't switch over to the new SIM for up to 24 hours after that, which I hadn't expected. Three's website also required the new and old mobile numbers to be put into the switching form in +44 format, rather than the 0... format printed on the SIM pack, which seems unnecessarily stupid of them.
I'm hoping that these issues are because the SIM card hasn't been in the 'phone for very long yet - a mere four hours, so far - and that it'll be 'active' when I try again tomorrow. But it's all really tiresome, so I do hope that Three isn't peculiarly unfriendly to new PAYG customers. -

Virgin drastically changing PAYG charging policy w.e.f. 18 November 2019 (Edited)
As if I didn't have enough hardware problems with my old mobile 'phone, my longstanding provider has just announced a swingeingly unfair price change for its PAYG customers, which severely penalises those like me who use a mobile 'phone only very little, rarely and irregularly.
They didn't consult PAYG customers first, or even alert their sales staff in advance, but are blandly forcing small-scale PAYG users into switching in a very few weeks' time, either using up all our current credit balances or being left to seek a refund. Their customer service staff are receiving numerous complaints but offering no help, merely feeding that back to the company's idiotic management. This fiasco is likely to give Virgin a really rotten reputation for poor customer service at this level.

Why can't my new 'phone find my computer by Bluetooth?
I bought a new basic mobile 'phone mainly because the camera on my old one failed completely. I haven't yet transferred my account to the new 'phone but, because it only takes a micro-SIM, I've already installed that and got the 'phone working - at least as a camera.
As I understand it, Bluetooth is a completely independent means of connecting to another device, so my new 'phone should be able to send pictures to my Bluetooth-enabled computer. But the 'phone can't seem to identify the computer, even when both are actively using Bluetooth, so I can't link the two devices. Any clever ideas for what I could do to fix this problem, please? -
Suddenly, I had no sound on my laptop.
I got a message "low on disk space". I clicked on computer and it says 1.80 gb of 55.5 gb free with a red line through the long box. I am not IT literate in any way. Is there a way in which I can restore the missing disk space? Appreciate any help. This discussion is now closed.

Switching to new mobile PAYG 'phone (Edited)
I use things until they break down permanently, so have had only three mobile 'phones in 16-odd years. I only use one for texting, occasional calls and taking pictures, not going online.
When the camera on the current 'phone failed, apparently irretrievably, I bought a new basic (2G) mobile 'phone, expecting to be able to put my existing PAYG SIM card into it - but then discovered that the new one only takes microSIM cards (of which I'd never previously heard). So, although I can transfer my mobile number to the new 'phone, I can't then use up the credit balance on the old SIM account.
Since my landline provider charges ridiculously high rates for daytime calls, the new EE network-based PAYG offering from 1pmobile.com looks very attractive. Although it claims to have no contract and to allow one to roll over any unused credit, it does require that one top up at least £10 at least once every 120 days - and I don't currently use £30 mobile credit a year, even paying Virgin's much higher call charges.
What would people advise that I do? -
Windows 10 - Sound Enhancement (Edited)
This is mainly for Realtek Drivers. But should work on other drivers.
Just ensure your drivers are up-to-date.
1. Using the Start menu search box, enter Control Panel and open file.
2. Click Hardware and Sound and then click Sound.
3. In the settings panel that comes up click Playback and right click on Speakers. Click Properties.
4. Click Enhancements. Scroll down the list and check Loudness
Equalisation.
5. Click OK.
Whilst having the sounds settings panel displayed, test your sound.
Click Sounds, a list of sound events shows.
For my example, I scrolled down the list and selected New Mail Notification. Click Test and the sound will occur. Mine was a lot higher than before this adjustment and is now perfect for me.
My clock chimes every hour. Before this small fix, I could barely hear it or that for new mails. -
Windows 10 Feature Update 1903 May 2019 (Edited)
Microsoft are phasing this update in offering it to users.
It is being kept separate from normal updates as a "when you are ready" item. Many users have not yet received it.
So far 1903 has had a mixed bag of reception, varying from catastrophe to no problems.
It is a lengthy update and takes around 1 hour in the best of cases to many hours in the worst.
I have decided to let it rest on ice for 2 - 3 months to allow 1903 to become stabilised with time.
What is your experience, have you installed it, if so did you have problems either on installation or thereafter ? -
Laptop making one helluva noise
Turned laptop on and the noise of the fan is making a noise like a car over revving. It has done this before quite a few times but it can be fixed by shutting down a nd restarting. But today no amount of shutting down and restarting is making the laptop run with its normal quietness.
It is not yet affecting ths software, apart from it is running a bit slower than usual.
Any suggestions what to do. -
Hi - I wonder if there's anyone here who's knowledgeable about repairs...
I have an Seagate external hard drive which admittedly is probably around 7 years old now, so a bit long in the tooth!
I went to retrieve some files from it the other day and can no longer access it - my laptop doesn't see it - it's not coming up in the file manager when I connect it like it used to. However, the power seems to be getting to it and the red light on the front is flashing on and off.
Tried using different power and USB cables with it to no avail so I think it's something internal.
Are these things easy to fix? Any recommendation of someone trustworthy and not too expensive that could have a look at it for me? Obviously I have a lot of files on it I don't want to lose.
Many thanks -

I guess apple have some cloud feature. I was wondering if there is a pc alternative. If i lost my laptop or it died i would be completely stuck.
