      Business search box (Edited)

There`s been some talk of the Local Loop and the Business Directory. I`ve got into the habit of NOT going there so I did and found it interesting-there`s enough in my area unlike some.
BUT the search is all wrong. If I want to look up a business it`s very common that I have no idea which business,I only know what type- Gas Engineer, Plumber ect. So why isn`t there a search for business type? Seems obvious to me that people don`t always know what the business they are hoping to find might be called.

      Bumping (Edited)

My policy on bumping and in reply to Locigo's thread is this -

Deliberate Bumping is bad Forum practice and is not acceptable on normal threads.
I will never bump a thread.
Having said that it is easy to bump a thread by making an innocent comment, so any objection to bumping is simply peeing into the wind.

The exception are Polls, which must remain near the top of a Loop post list whilst active.
So for all Polls I create, if progressive posts place the Poll too far down the list, I WILL bump them.

      Labelling

We appear to have an increasing number of members being "labelled" with no indication to whom it refers.
Can someone please tell me who is in the "clique", "gang", "those people", "witches", "undesirables" and now we have "his / her crowd".
To me we are nearly all strangers, have never met face to face and don't know anyone true personality or disabilities. So why the need for "labelling"?

I was asked in another thread "why would this forum put off new members". This could be one of the reasons as "labelling" appears to be on the increase in the open loops which includes the Scoop moderator loops.

Posts going into community when I want them in a loop

Several times recently I've been in a loop and decided to make a new post but it has ended up in community rather than the loop I'm in.

Is this a glitch or is it just me doing it wrong?

Has this happened to anyone else?

      NHS waiting times (Edited)

With a recent survey being carried out by the charity, Engage Britain, it has been found that as many as 1 in 5 British people have felt the need to go private with their healthcare. It has been a long known and much discussed fact that the NHS is overstretched and its workers overworked, however this survey sheds a new light on an ever growing problem.

The survey found that while 77% of people were proud of the NHS, many also felt let down by the service. The majority of the people who had felt the need to go private had done so as they had encountered difficulties arranging treatment on the NHS or the service was simply not available on the NHS. It is a shocking statistic that in a country offering free healthcare 20% of people still feel the need to pay to ensure that they receive adequate service.

Have you seen a big difference in the NHS services post Covid? Are the waiting times now recovering following an initial set back or will treatment times and appointment availability be an issue we are dealing with for a long time to come?

The number of people receiving diagnostic tests and consultant led treatment this summer is more than double the amount when compared to Summer 2020 and the national medical director for NHS England has said: "NHS staff have worked tirelessly over the pandemic, caring for 450,000 patients with the virus in hospital, which has inevitably had a knock-on effect on less urgent care and created a backlog, but staff are also now pulling out all the stops to recover services and help more people as they come forward for care.’’

      Ideas for Scooploop

      Good morning everyone

We hope you are all doing well.

We would like to pick your brains a little over a topic we are currently looking into. Along with the recent Loop changes we are steadily building more and more tools for both users and moderators; enabling Scooploop to become increasingly customisable and individual for each user.

We would love to hear your thoughts on which tools you believe Scooploop needs.

We have had a few suggestions from our user base already.

With some users suggesting moderators should have the ability to control users behaviours in their groups more extensively. This could possibly mean moderators having the ability to block certain users from interacting with each other for a certain amount of time, to help disperse ongoing arguments.

What are your thoughts on this? Do changes need to be made and if so which changes do you feel would benefit yourself and Scooploop the most? It would be great to hear any ideas outside of the blocking debate also.

We look forward to hearing all your thoughts & ideas!

      Have a great day

      Good morning Scoop.

      Holidays & Travel 2021

With the Covid pandemic feeling like it is easing up slightly, what is everyone thinking about holidays?

Over the last few weeks restrictions have been eased and we have all been encouraged to try and return to a sense of normality. Whilst this is a great step in the right direction, it can also be hard to balance real life with the right amount of caution. So, should webe travelling this summer? If so, what are the correct precautions to be taking? We have seen companies endorsing ‘cautious travel' - putting safety and flexibility at the top of their priority list.

Over the last couple of years many people have lost out not only on the opportunity to travel, but also financially. With companies refusing to reimburse cancelled holidays and airlines offering credits rather than refunds when travel corridors have changed at the last minute... This has led to the majority of people who are looking to get away to only consider the safest of options. Which has in turn led to a record number of tourists holidaying in their home countries. However is this now becoming counterproductive?

With resorts in the UK packed to full capacity and towns heaving with tourists it seems a far cry from the restrictions we were all complying with just a few weeks ago. Yet also a very welcome and much needed break for everyone. Were the restrictions lifted too quickly too soon? Or is everyone just happy to be returning to normal again?

Supermarket shelves emptying ... but what is to blame?

Recently, visiting the local supermarket has brought back flashes from the height of Covid in 2020. The emptying shelves and nationwide lack of toilet roll, although now not as pronounced or as toilet paper -focused, has led me to wonder what is behind this? It seems to be a lesser spoken about subject, however shelves are definitely emptier. Is this a fall-out effect from Covid, or could it be an early Brexit indication of issues to come?

Looking into this a little deeper it seems that the Road Haulage Association believe this to be a combination effect. There is a shortage of supermarket staff following job lay-offs over the last year and self-isolation after coming into contact with an infection case. This is coupled with a shortage of lorry drivers, estimated to be around 100,000 fewer than needed, as a direct effect of Brexit, meaning it is harder for people from other European countries to work in the UK. Many drivers also returned to their home countries during the pandemic and training of new drivers ground to a halt over the last year or so. The combination has resulted in some of our biggest supermarket chains, such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, warning that they are now unable to keep their shelves fully stocked.

With so many different factors playing a part in this situation, do we think this is a long-term problem or simply a short-term effect of a rocky few months?

More autonomy for Post Originators (OP)

      This will be contentious!

Would it be possible to give more autonomy to the Original Poster (OP) of posts.

We know and acknowledge that some people decide to attack and disrupt conversation for the least possible reason, mainly because they are able.

Would it be possible for the OP of a post to 'Hide' comments from other people and even remove people from continuing to comment on threads?

Obviously there would still be Moderators who would have their armoury as well. This suggestion will be in addition to - and not replacing - formal moderation, but by the OP who needs to silence disruptive elements from destroying their thread.

Any 'hidden' comments or other actions would be annotated that they were performed by the OP.

My view is that this will allow more people to control their discussions better.

Obviously any abuse - for example silencing genuine and certifiable differences of opinion - should be addressed by complaints to Scooploop who could withdraw the provision from that particular OP.

It would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

How are loops doing at the moment member participation wise?

      Hi Scoop,
I just wondered how Loops are doing at the moment with members participating?
The few groups I am in are very quiet with few people taking part at all . I myself have been quiet on them myself as every thread seems to break down into point scoring or personal attacks and I cannot be bothered with the same arguments. I notice a lot of regulars in them have been silent and I wondered if they felt this way or simply weren't interested in the conversation topics? Is there anything that can be done to bring all of the lovely members whom I always enjoy reading back to posting? Or is it simply time to find ( or create) a new Loop?

      Good morning

We are looking to create a new loop called 'Scooploop Sandbox.'

This will be an area where users can experiment with creating posts, posting links, videos and pictures; so that you can get a feel for how our new changes work.

All new users would join this loop automatically. However it would be open to all of our users and we would encourage our current users to join and support our newcomers.

We would like to hear your thoughts on this idea and to understand if this is something that you see value in?

      Combatting racism on Scooploop

We hope you are all well and having a great day.

We would like to take a moment to remind our community that we do not accept racism in any form on this platform. Anything we view as being racist will be removed and the users who have posted such views risk suspension.

Racism includes name calling, prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism, by individuals towards certain ethnic or racial groups. It also includes derogatory comments aimed at specific groups of people, and stereotyping of people based on their physical appearance.

We would also like to remind loop moderators that they are responsible for maintaining Scooploop's standards of behaviour within their loops.

      Post Titles

Purely as a matter of interest, as we have had the option, for quite a while now, of using a Title when we make a post, do you have any numbers to let us know how many haven't used a Title?
I know there was one case where I forgot - until immediately after hitting "Post". I'm guessing this may be the case for others as well. However, my view is that the majority of Posts do have a Title.
If I am correct, could we switch the default to offering a Title which we can ignore if one is not required, rather than have to positively request the box to be available for completion.
      Thank you

      Moderation in Scooploop Support Loops

      Good afternoon everyone!

As we keep getting multiple requests from users about more strict moderation on our loops - we have decided to appoint an additional moderator to Scooploop Tech Support and Scooploop Community Support loops. This person will be in charge to keep discussions on the right track and (especially on weekends) react to violation of the rules.

We hope that this will help to keep the friendly atmosphere on our forum.

We also know that it has sometimes been a bit difficult following conversations in a busy post, from notifications, but hopefully the new 'new' indicator has made this a bit easier. Maybe?

So, this weekend's poser, how are you getting on with replies and the new way of using Scooploop?

      Handles and Names on Scooploop

Scooploop has granted an exceptional request to change the handle for user to @Socrates. Requests from other users in future will be declined.

On sign-up, a new user is asked to enter their name, and also to select a 'handle' (shown as ), a personal ID which is unique to them.

A user may change their display name if they wish; however, they cannot change their handle. The handle is the name that absolutely and uniquely identifies a user through their time on Scooploop and ensures that, whatever the display name, other users will always be able to identify the user.

Using my laptop. If I click on the drop down Notifications. Then click on the first one, for example one from the Euro2020 thread, it only marks that one as thread, even though there are probably dozens more.
It was much better when you clicked on one, and all the others of the same thread were marked as read.

      Let's chat about...

      ...Racism
      (A definition from Wikipedia:
Racism is the belief that groups of humans possess different behavioral traits corresponding to physical appearance and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another.
It may also mean prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they are of a different ethnicity.
Modern variants of racism are often based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. These views can take the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems in which different races are ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities.)

      Why have I written this?
I recently came across a thread which had the following “Joke”. (Thread:“Shop” in Fun for All)
“Why can’t Indians play football… cause every time they take a corner they make a shop”
My immediate response to that was, “That is extremely racist”.

Another member, not the author, countered with “I am not of British descent and my Father owned a shop. It’s a joke”

To which I replied, “I am of British descent, my grandparents owned a shop – coincidentally a corner shop (in Leicester). It is racist.
Or are you suggesting that if you smile when uttering something racist then it’s OK?”

The response to that was “DerekR I don’t need someone else to make judgements on a joke about a family that is closer to my own than yours. Unless you are telling me your skin colour is the same as mine!”

Well that surprised me, only a person of colour was allowed to make comments about how inappropriate racist remarks were. My final response was “I have no idea what colour your skin is, nor does it matter. The words printed above make a racist statement.”

After which the thread was closed – however, not removed – merely closed.

So, what was I being told?
It appeared that I was being told that if something was classed by someone as a joke, then there was nothing racist about it.
It further appeared that unless you were likely to be a victim of racism, you are not in a position to make a complaint or report the issue.

Let’s look at the second part first. There isn’t a crime on the Statue Books that cannot be reported by anyone. You don’t have to be a banker to be able to report that a bank robbery is in progress. You don’t have to be a rape victim to be able to report that a rape is taking place if you see it.
Similarly, you don’t have to be the recipient of racism to be able to recognise and report such an offence.

Let’s look at the first part – it was a joke!
Thomas E. Ford, Western Carolina University explains that making the statement
"It doesn’t count as hostility or prejudice because I didn’t mean it — it’s just a joke" is not a get out of jail card for those who practice ‘Disparagement Humour’.

Further reading about Disparagement humour can be found here:

      https://theconversation.com/amp/psychology-behind-the-unfunny-consequences-of-jokes-that-denigrate-63855

This is a part of the article the link above takes you to:

Psychology research suggests that disparagement humour is far more than “just a joke.” Regardless of its intent, when prejudiced people interpret disparagement humour as “just a joke” intended to make fun of its target and not prejudice itself, it can have serious social consequences as a releaser of prejudice.

Disparagement humour – any attempt to amuse through the denigration of a social group or its representatives. You know it as sexist or racist jokes – basically anything that makes a punchline out of a marginalized group.

Disparagement humour is paradoxical: It simultaneously communicates two conflicting messages. One is an explicit hostile or prejudiced message. But delivered alongside is a second implicit message that “it doesn’t count as hostility or prejudice because I didn’t mean it — it’s just a joke.”

By disguising expressions of prejudice in a cloak of fun and frivolity, disparagement humour, like the jokes above, appears harmless and trivial. However, a large and growing body of psychology research suggests just the opposite – that disparagement humour can foster discrimination against targeted groups.

What about the people who are the subject of a “Joke”?
Here is a very interesting article from someone on the receiving end of a "joke".

      https://www.ft.com/content/1efefa49-6e57-4743-b44b-20501432d307

If you are aware of any racist behaviour, or are a victim of racism, you should report it to the police.

      What is racial harassment?
Racial harassment includes jokes, name-calling, threats and physical violence and it should not be tolerated. It may be directed towards your ethnic or cultural background, your beliefs, food you eat or don't eat, your clothing, your hair, or your family.

Racial harassment can take place anywhere.

      https://www.thesource.me.uk/home/do-you-know-about/racism/

The following information is from Childline, where children who suffer from racism and bullying can go to get help. Why am I including information aimed at children? Simply because these children are being taught what to expect in life, we as adults should know, understand and feed those expectations and we should comply with those expectations.

WHAT ARE RACISM AND RACIAL BULLYING?
Racism is where someone thinks you’re inferior because of your colour, ethnicity, nationality or race. This can result in them treating you differently or unfairly, this is called racial discrimination.

Racial bullying is a type of racism where someone’s bullying focuses on your race, ethnicity or culture. Racism and racial bullying are wrong and you can get help to make it stop.

Racism and racist bullying can include:

      - being called racist names or being sent insulting messages or threats
      - having your belongings damaged or having to see racist graffiti
      - personal attacks, including violence or assault
      - being left out, treated differently or excluded
      - people making assumptions about you because of your colour, race or culture
      - being made to feel like you have to change how you look
      - racist jokes, including jokes about your colour, nationality race or culture.

Racism can affect anyone. It can make you feel like you’re not important or don’t fit in. You might feel upset, depressed or angry. You can be affected by it even when it’s not aimed at you, like if you hear someone discriminating against someone’s culture.

No matter how racism makes you feel, we’re here to support you.

      4 things to remember

      - It's illegal to treat someone differently or unfairly because of their race.
      - Racism and racial bullying is wrong, even if the person doesn't realise they're doing it.
      - If someone commits a crime against you because of your race, religion or culture that is a hate crime.
      - You're not alone, and there are ways to get support.

Further information can be found here:
      https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/bullying-abuse-safety/crime-law/racism-racial-bullying/

      Just to clarify:
Are all “Jokes” which mention foreign nationals racist?
No, there is an amusing one in the same group about the Indian lady who was lost. The mention of her being Indian was paramount to the punchline and was used to contextualise things. It was not aimed at denegration in any way and did not portray her in a stereotypical way. It was a pun and could equally have been changed to “An Englishman pretended he was the head of Amazon, but he was Joe King”. Or anything equally innocuous.

In the last week or so much has been said about following the reporting system and allowing Scooploop and moderators to deal with matters.
      This matter was:
      - complained about to the person involved, by me stating that it was extremely racist
      - reported to Scooploop
      - confirmed by Scooploop that they considered it to be racist
      - reported by Scooploop to the new Group Moderator
      - totally ignored, because as of the time this post was posted, the "joke" being discussed is still available for all to see, which means that moderation has not worked and mockeration has replaced it.

Furthermore, to those who feel that I picked on this “Joke” in particular and the author concerned due to reasons other than it being racist, I suggest that you read all of the above again to actually understand that the challenge was totally justified. The “Joke” was not humorous, it was a statement attempting to stereotype a race as being incapable of anything other than running corner shops - and that is not a joking matter.

Just before I finish this article, here is a thought from a Muslim, regarding Corner Shop “jokes”. I print it verbatim:
“Please note: the following article includes a word which some may find insulting and hateful. The word has been censored using asterisks.
‘Why did Roman’s build straight roads? So P***s wouldn’t build corner shops.’
So the time-honoured joke goes. Like all racist jokes, it is matched in its bigotry only by its total lack of imagination and humour. And like all tropes that involved South Asian corner shop owners, it evoked a visceral response from me. My cheeks would flush, my spine would bolt upright, a defence reflex that was programmed into me and which, frustratingly, betrayed the shame and embarrassment I was so desperate to mask. The adolescent pressure to appear perennially unmoved and impassive in my youth was made impossible for me by the many racial stereotypes I was forced to navigate as someone of Pakistani heritage growing up in 90s Britain. Chief amongst them was the comical, linguistically deficient “bud-bud-ding-ding-one-ninety-nine” corner shop owner. A stereotype which contains the inherent contradiction of nationalist, racist thinking – framing an industrious and resilient desire to be and contribute with the lazy, parasitic portrayals of immigrants in modern folklore.”
The full article can be found here:
      https://www.everydaymuslim.org/blog/corner-shop-diaries/
Finally, I urge anyone subjected to, or noticing racism, to report it, regardless of who you are, where it is seen or where or by whom it originated. Sport is trying to defeat racism, we all should.
And I urge Scooploop to deal with racism properly, especially as items can easily be read on the internet via Google and we don’t all want to be considered similar to the few.

Private messages – private or not?

There's currently a debate about whether one should ever publicize a private message by pasting it into the open forum. This has been caused by one member posting an extremely abusive PM to another. One member has referred to putting a PM in the open forum as being a breach of etiquette, but where is the etiquette in sending vituperative unsolicited PMs?

My own view is this: I exchange private messages with a few people on here and I wouldn't dream of putting any of them on the public forum, but should a person choose to dump abuse in my PM box they can expect to see that held up to the light. People aiming to be abusive gain power by thinking the recipient will accept the idea of privacy and will not expose their abuse to the public view. Should anyone try it with me, I want to take away that power. I find the idea of someone sending PMs like the one sent to someone yesterday, confident that no one on the public forum will see just how horrible they can be, really nauseating.

Please could you let us know your policy on this?

      Scooploop Changes (Edited)

      Hi all,

As previously mentioned you will notice some changes happening to Scooploop over the next few weeks and months. Do not panic; this will in no way affect how/what you currently use Scooploop for.
The first change you will notice is us renaming our groups as 'loops'. But this is not a cosmetic tweaking. We will be homing in on the 'loop' part of our name and branding Scooploop as the platform to 'Live in loops'.

Everything happening on Scooploop will happen in 'loops' as a core functionality. There will also be a strong emphasis on the local section with local loops coming into play a little bit further down the road.

Some other changes relating to making loops the base for Scooploop are detailed below.
      - Users will be able to quickly set up as many loops as they want.
      - There will be private loops - for close friends to interact.
      - Loop moderators will gain many more configuration settings:
      · Deciding what their members can and cannot do (e.g. closing a thread)
      · Settings for admitting new users (e.g. requiring users to agree to T&C or allowing only sms-verified users)
      · Deciding how blocking works per loop basis
      · The ability to decide which extra widgets their given loop will have (e.g. events section, Q & A forms, etc)
      · Boosting posts (also to other loops) and many more features
      - Loops will also gain instant chat widgets
      - Users will gain plenty of new notification and visibility settings.
During this process we will also be discontinuing certain features that are not in the spirit of loops. Such as Pages, or other features. Pages for example will still exist but will become a type of Loop, just with users having no ability to post things in these 'page loops'.

Those changes sound like a lot of work and they are. However the goal is to activate users by allowing moderators to brand their loops and therefore allowing users to pick and choose the most suitable loops for them.

      Scooploop

I would like to say that SL is an excellent social Forum.

SL has site moderators who could do more to censure anti-social posts which spoil members pleasure, but actually do a very reasonable job, for which we must all thank them.

The SL Team do take into account our comments and feedback, implementing those measures which they consider beneficial to the Forum and individual in general.

The Forum format is extremely well designed and site navigation is excellent.

I cannot find another social Forum that is anywhere near as good as SL.

Let us all appreciate SL and endeavour to keep it a friendly Forum for all to enjoy and refrain from engaging in petty and unnecessary offensive behaviour.

Well done the SL Team for providing an excellent social Forum for us all to enjoy.

      Changes

We hope you are all well.

As part of the changes coming up we will be removing the ‘Title’ bar when posting.
Moving forwards, when posting, you will have just one area in which to write your text and will not have to ‘Title’ your post.

We hope you enjoy the changes.

      Have a great day

      The Scooploop Team

      Deleted comments (Edited)

I'm seeing a lot of "This comment was deleted by its author". Is this because I have been blocked by someone or members are not reading their comments, before posting, and therefore delete them if they feel they are not appropriate?

      Multiple accounts issue

      Hi all!

It was brought to our attention that some users are using multiple accounts to disrupt discussions on Scooploop.

We would like to remind everyone that these types of activities are unwelcome on scooploop as they destroy the purpose of a legitimate discussion.

Moving forwards, if we suspect an account to be an alias to an existing user account we will take action to suspend without warning (temporarily or indefinitely).

      Ravensbourne School Food Bank

Had this text forwarded to me ........

As we all know the past year has been an extremely difficult one and we have all been impacted by this pandemic in a number of different ways. As a school we are even more aware of these impacts as we have students who come from a diverse range of backgrounds and we want to make sure that everybody feels supported during this incredibly challenging time. We are very pleased to announce that due to the very hard work of the staff here at The Ravensbourne School, we are now in a position to launch our very own food bank.

We know that many of you will be anxious to donate to our food bank. However, we ask that you only make a donation whilst passing the school as part of an essential journey and not make specific trips to donate. If you do wish to donate there will be storage units inside the main doors of the main reception but outside of the glass doors, this is to ensure that contact is minimalised within school. Food storage bins will be placed into isolation for a set period before being placed into general food bank storage. For those wanting to make a donation, they will be accepted Monday to Friday 8am-12pm.

All items must be non-perishable. The list that follows is only suggestions and not extensive: cereal, tins of beans/spaghetti/tomatoes, pasta, rice or noodles, cooking sauce, tinned fruit and vegetables, spreads like jam, honey etc., bread sticks/ crackers, UHT milk, juices, tea and coffee. We also suggest items such as: deodorants, shower gels, shampoos etc and essential baby items too like formula, nappies and wipes.

All items that are donated will be stored at room temperature in specific areas in a set room. Due to this any item requiring temperature control unfortunately cannot be accepted. There will be a clear separation between new donations and stock that is ready to be issued. Regular stock takes will occur to ensure that all items have at least a 7 day use by date, this will also be adhered to by staff when accepting donations. It is also important to mention that when handling donations all staff will follow the appropriate government guidelines.

We would like to thank Tesco and Sainsburys Bromley for their very kind donations which have been extremely valuable in establishing the stock we currently have. In addition, a massive thank you has to be said to the players and staff of Bromley FC who themselves donated in great volume and we are very grateful to everyone for their ongoing support with our project as we endeavour to give back to our school community.

      Yours faithfully

Lewis Knox, Head Boy & The Student Leadership Team

      Blocking and Followers

Posting this on behalf of the Support team:
      - a few people recently have asked us to bring back the blocking function in its original form (from like 2-3 ago - some users might still remember it), so we have decided to reimplement it. Hopefully we'll be done this week.
      - you will be able to manage your followers list, also to happen this week
      - some aspects of the changes might not be present on the app but it will catch up eventually (usually takes a week)

Both changes will give you more control over your Scooploop account. I'm expecting comments to flourish under this thread but SL might not be able to answer till tomorrow.

      Followers (Edited)

This is rearing it's ugly head again, I'm afraid.

I received a notification on Friday evening (via email) that I was being followed by someone on here, with whom I have had very little contact/verbal exchange. We only mutually belong to Scoop's own Groups (ie, this one and your Tech Support) therefore, do not understand why he finds my meagre contributions so interesting. I managed to temporarily get rid of my follower (I don't like followers, find them creepy and stalker-ish). But within the hour, he had tried to follow me again, when I find no reason for him to have done so. I have now blocked him completely. This should not be necessary.

Could you please stop the 'Following Option' - it can be really intimidating. I think if someone wishes to 'Follow' someone, they need to ask permission first.

      Thanks
