https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/oct/01/paul-and-jack-were-murdered-by-their-abusive-father-why-had-the-family-courts-granted-him-contact This is enraging. Why do the authorities not listen to the mothers and children? There may be a few mothers who are making false claims either for revenge on partners who have simply left or they just don’t want to see them in connection with child contact, but I think this is probably very rare. Male violence against women sadly isn’t. -
I just heard this prog on Radio 4 and really enjoyed it - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00237nb It turns out that it's been running for a long time, so I'll do a hunt to see how many previous episodes are available and what they cover. I'd never really listened to Oasis before! Maybe everyone here already knows the prog, but I tend to listen to Radio 3 all day as I can work alongside classical music, but not any music with words in it.

There's a lot that's depressing about modern life but one of the things to set against that is the way that, sometimes, people aren't written off in a way they once would have been. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/sep/09/defying-expectations-amazing-paralympic-photographers-with-disabilities -

I just had an email saying my Prime account needed renewing and my credit card had expired - at first glance it looked as if it might be genuine. It wasn't. (Of course the usual trick of 'expiring now' was used to try to prompt a response without caution.) I dare say that whoever is behind it is trying other 'Amazon' scams. -

This piece is more than three months old, says the Guardian, but I don’t imagine things have improved. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/feb/25/they-bite-they-hit-they-spit-patients-assault-staff-at-nottingham-hospital I suspect that people spending hour after hour watching onscreen vileness and violence is to blame - they begin to lose touch with what most people would regard as normal life. The people who do that don’t tend to be among the brightest to start off with. -

I just came across this keep-fit person on youtube and was so relieved to see a down-to-earth elderly northerner instead of someone glowing and groomed - I thought others here might like her and her advice. https://www.youtube.com/live/_CyZlQwmHxg I can imagine she might become irritating but am posting her now in case I forget . . . -

Does everyone here already know this big disadvantage to using PayPal? I didn’t, and have used it a lot to buy goods just using a password rather than typing in my credit card number - I also thought it might be safer. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2024/apr/24/matchesfashion-strikes-a-sour-note-as-my-902-goes-missing -

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/apr/06/vet-who-really-profits-from-poorly-pets I'm lucky enough to have an independent vet just a couple of miles away. Even so, my previous cat's bills came to more than £20k in a year – £7000 for a three-day stay at the RCVS hospital at Potters Bar to kick off with. -

Some years ago I took part in a photography exhibition in St Petersburg (Russia, not US) and I've remained in friendly contact with the organiser. We're exchanging emails about the awful attack in Moscow and it's obvious we are miles apart - she insists it was Ukraine, backed by the USA, which never issued the warning about a planned Islamic State attack that I mentioned to her. She's a long-term government employee, now running a big state museum, so I'm careful about what I say in emails to her as they're probably not private. But it's scary just how much she apparently believes this has US involvement, when the Islamic State hates Russia and the US have given the latter warnings about attacks. Or am I being very naive? -

'Jeremy Hunt has doubled down on his claim that earning £100,000 a year “doesn’t go as far as you might think” for people in his Surrey constituency, after he was criticised for being out of touch. 'The chancellor had previously tweeted that the sum was “not a huge salary” for people in South West Surrey. The median salary for a full-time worker last year was £34,963 and in Surrey it is £42,000. 'Hunt defended his remarks by saying that people in his constituency were living in an area of very high average house prices. 'He told Sky News’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips: “What sounds like a large salary – when you have house prices averaging around £670,000 in my area and you’ve got a mortgage and childcare costs – it doesn’t go as far as you might think. ' “We weren’t able to afford to fund childcare for people on the higher salaries but I was simply saying that’s something I’d love to be able to look at in the next parliament.” ' https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/mar/24/jeremy-hunt-doubles-down-on-100k-a-year-doesnt-go-far-claim They could, of course, live in a less nice area with lower house prices than they'd like to, as I and millions of other people do. -

Just thought I'd mention this excellent source of second-hand books https://www.abebooks.co.uk - I'm particularly pleased with it this morning as it turns out that one of the books I ordered is coming from an educational charity - so much better than Amazon (though the reason I'm buying second-hand is because two seem to be only available new from Australia, with a seven-month wait - I do prefer a pristine copy, I admit, though it's not a very ecological approach).
