I use my phone (iphone 7) for absolutely everything. I am short of memory and can no longer download updates. I have deleted lots but am running out of stuff to delete.
Do I need to get a new phone or a new sim or do something else?
Please advise using only words a 3 year old would understand. Thanks in anticipation.

TV has suddenly lost its channel hold
My admittedly old Toshiba TV has ceased to be able to hold onto a channel at all. Is there anything I can do to fix that?
It was fine until last night, when I had already tuned to BBC1 before a programme that I'd meant to watch. When the timer reminder asked me whether I wanted to keep or cancel the timed programme, the remote control wouldn't respond, whichever way I clicked - which isn't unheard of - but the channel number suddenly began scrolling backwards and wouldn't stop doing so.
Turning the TV right off and leaving it for a long period only results in the TV initially showing BBC1 for a couple of seconds, then scrolling backwards through the channels before I can switch it to any other channel manually.
I've not noticed any model number on the TV itself but the remote control is marked "Toshiba CT-90326". -

I just had an email from security@facebookmail.com saying 'Hi Diana,
We've noticed that you're having trouble with logging in to your account. If you need help, click the button below and we'll log you in.
Log In with One Click
Why have you received this email?
There was an unsuccessful login attempt on your account. If this wasn't you, let us know.'
Address given was Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd., Attention: Community Operations, 4 Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2, Ireland
So I checked that this was a legit email address, but then found advice that if in doubt, check the security and login on your Settings page - and there I saw 'We haven't sent you any emails about security in the last two weeks'
So, hmm, does that count as an email about security? I'm not sure whether this email is legit or not – I suppose the FB address might have been spoofed . . . -

Arthur C. Clarke's 1964 prediction of the future (Edited)
He predicted the Internet, and 'the invention to end all inventions', a replicator, or, as we know it, a 3D printer.
"The only thing we can be sure of about the future, is that it will be absolutely fantastic. So, if what I say now seems to you to be very reasonable, then I will have failed completely." - Arthur C Clarke.

How can I force Windows 10 to leave my sound settings alone.
Hi
I'm running Windows 10 Home 64 bit version 21H1.
Windows keeps changing the bass setting to the maximum level (+12.0 dB) which sounds horrible.
I reset it to 0.0 dB in sound control panel - Speaker properties - Tone and it stays there for a few days but then Windows switches it back to +12.0 dB without asking me. Is there any way to force Windows to leave the sound settings the way I want?

When a UK friend turns out to be abroad
I found contact details for a long-lost but UK-based friend the other day and called her mobile number, which was a lovely surprise for her. But she told me that she was in Hungary at that point, so that the call should be cut short as it would be extremely expensive.
It doesn't seem easy to find out what the charges may be for accidentally making a call to a UK 'phone whose user is abroad. This can't be the same as a roaming charge for using one's mobile 'phone while oneself abroad but what is this called (if it has a name)?
I use 1pmobile, whose website is effectively blocked by cookies, so I can't find anything relevant. -
Can anyone suggest how I can reconnect to my wi-fi when the available networks have suddenly stopped showing? All I get now is a panel saying APM Network Access and showing my wi-fi status as 'turned off' . When I click on the option to turn it back on manually, it then takes me to settings and when I click on 'show available networks', it takes me back to the original panel - so I'm stuck in a loop! It's an old laptop running Windows 10 if that's any help and was fine up until recently. Thanks for any suggestions :-)

If you are starting to get interference (pixelating) on Freeview, that you did not get before, this may be due to 4G, or particularly 5G phone masts. This is due to the frequencies that have been allocated to the phone masts being close to the TV frequencies. It was known that this would occur, so an agency called Restore TV was set up to deal with it.
If you are having this trouble, visit the Restore TV website for information. You may remember, that when Channel 5 started broadcasting, it interfered with video recorders. To overcome this, a device was supplied to block Channel 5! Restore TV will provide such a device free, to reduce the mast signals. You can call their helpline on 0808 13 13 800.

Home internet connection failure (Edited)
For no obvious reason, I lost my home wi-fi connection some ten days ago. What had worked fine on Thursday evening barely connected for a moment on Friday and had died completely by the weekend.
My ISP sent me a new DSL cable and microfilter, which got me back online for a very few minutes and then failed in its turn. They eventually accepted that I'd had that router for more than a couple of years and sent a replacement - but even that didn't work. Nothing in the router connection manual helped me to get online.
A helpful neighbour came round to check that my new connection worked for his laptop, then tackled mine. He tinkered with something - a programme in a long list (that I can't find) - which seemed to be about mobile connectivity. That didn't seem relevant to getting a laptop to 'talk' to my home router but it worked - until I turned the laptop off for a few hours!
So I went into Startup and scoured the list of apps there, found something with a different name that sounded as if it were about mobile connectivity for my Dell and turned that on, then restarted the laptop. That worked, fortunately.
Yet it hadn't been necessary while the old router was working. Is it common for different routers to need different software to be used on the same computer before the two can 'talk' to one another? -

Posted on behalf of @Belaxyz (Edited)
@Belaxyz Hello Bela, I have removed your post because you gave your email address; you should never do that on a public website.
Bela's post: Dear John H, you are offering some help to ignorant people like me. My problem is that I have an HP CP4MPFV desk top PC running on Win 11 and when it was on Win 10 it had a Skype application that I used for talking with my relations in foreign lands. UNFORTUNATELY by mistake I upgraded my PC to Win 11 and Skype stopped working. I tried to reload it but it would not and I don't know how to make it work. -
Wireless printer on connecting to the Wi-Fi
Firstly, this is not a new printer I'm trying to connect for the first time. It has been working perfectly well for quite a few years. But the last two times I've needed to print something I've not been able to.
When I turn the printer on certain buttons have flashing lights which become solid when ready. But the button that shows Wi-fi has connected either has no light at all or constantly flashes but never goes solid. Normaly it would flash about 10 times only.
The wi-fi is working as this laptop and a few phones all connect ok.
HP's help tools are not much help as they can't find the printer due to no connection. Bit of a catch-22 situation.
Only thing I can think is to unplug the router and start it again. -
This morning when I turned on the laptop I got the message

Scooploop tip No.4 - My Hub (Edited)
You may not have noticed, or forgotten about 'My Hub', which is the second item down next to your avatar.
Clicking this, will take you to a page which displays your recent posts in the centre. The right-hand side shows information relating to your account, such as:
Your friends
Loops you run
Saved posts
Your recent activity
Blocked and muted users
Your recent comments
The left-hand side has many links, including the number of loops you use, and your account settings. -
Scooploop tip No.3 - Desktop link to Scooploop (or any other website)
You can easily create a desktop link to Scooploop (or any other website), with one click, as follows:
1. Go to Scooploop in your browser.
2. Adjust browser window to enable you to see the desktop.
3. Now click and hold on the padlock at the start of the address, and keeping the mouse button down, drag to the desktop and release. -
Greyed out website (Edited)
I've been trying to find some material to help tenant neighbours but the best source is Shelter's website (https://england.shelter.org.uk/) - every page of which keeps greying out, so that I can't copy any of the text, use its hyperlinks etc etc. Even its contact page does this and the links for accessibility etc at the foot of each page are unusable, too.
No other site that I look up greys out, so the problem can't be with my laptop.
Is there any general technical reason why this greying-out might happen to a UK website?
I've e-mailed Shelter and tried messaging them but their autoreply on Messenger unhelpfully only says that they aim to reply within 5 working days, which is hopeless for issues like this. -

Scooploop tip No.2 - What did they say? (Edited)
Further to tip No.1 - What did I say?
To find the post or comment that you made, you will have to go to your profile to find its location, unless, of course, you can identify it from what you have said. In your profile, you can choose to have it display your posts and comments separately, Clicking on your post/comment, will take you to the post to see what others have said. However, if the post has been deleted, then the only way you can do this, is to remember who else was in the post, and then go to their profile.
If a post or comment was made by someone that is no longer a member, then depending on how they deleted their account, you will see their comment as 'anonymous' or 'this comment was deleted by its author'.
The deletion of an account to remove all data, only removes it from Scooploop, it does not remove it from the web, where it may stay visible forever. Other ways to see your posts, are to go to the particular loop and click on 'My activity' or, if recent, see those and more information in 'My Hub'.
There is also the loop's Search facility, not the Scooploop search at the top of the page. You cannot, of course, look in private/closed loops. There are also hidden loops. -
Internet radio - Part 2 - Worldwide Radio* (Edited)
Worldwide Radio will give you access to about 50,000 radio stations around the world. You can add it to Chrome. Its main advantage, if you are a music lover, is that it has a built-in equaliser. This will allow you to adjust the sound to fit the type of music you are listening to. It also has its own volume control. If you click the image in the top right of the program window, it will take you to its website if it has one: https://bit.ly/3pL7f1f

Scooploop tip - No.3 - Saving a post (Edited)
At the bottom of the drop-down menu for a post is 'Save', clicking this will add the post to your 'Saved posts', which is in your drop-down menu next to your avatar. Should anyone add to the post, it will be included in your saved post. Should this post have comments removed, they will also be removed from your saved post, also, if the post should be deleted by Scooploop, it will disappear for good.
To ensure that you will always have the post, you can use the 'Save as' menu choice in your browser, but this will only save the post as at that time. To keep it up to date, you will have to save it again. -

A few tips (Edited)
Increase viewing area of a webpage: if you press F11, the site you are viewing will fill the screen, repeat to return to normal.
Moving down a webpage: No need to scroll or click, just tap the spacebar.
Where's my mouse pointer? You can find your pointer by tapping Ctrl, you will see a circle zooming in to show where your mouse pointer is. You can activate this feature by typing 'mouse pointer' into the taskbar search box, then in the box that appears, click the tick/check box at the bottom, then click Apply and OK. -
There are various ways to turn off a PC, one of the quickest is to have a desktop icon to do it. To create the icon, do the following:
1. Right-click in an empty space on the desktop, click NEW then SHORTCUT
2. Copy and paste into the text box the following: shutdown.exe -s -t 00
3. Click NEXT, then type SHUTDOWN in the text box, then click FINISH.
You can leave the icon that appears on your desktop as it is, or change it to show the power icon as follows:
1. Right-click the icon.
2. Click properties at the bottom.
3. Click 'Change icon' button, bottom middle.
4. Click OK in the box that appears.
5. Choose the red power icon, and click OK.
6. Click Apply and OK on the remaining widow.
You can now position the icon above the Windows Start icon on the taskbar. -
If you want to share part of a webpage with someone, without having to describe where it is on the page, you can do this in Edge as follows:
1. Select the text you want to share
2. Right-click and select 'Copy link to highlight' at the top of the menu.
You can now share this link as you wish, and keep it if you want to refer to it in the future. -
Internet Radio - Part 1 - Visit the Radio Garden - Listen to radio stations around the world (Edited)
Visit the Radio Garden and plant some seeds. You can spin the globe and zoom in to any location to listen to a radio station by clicking the dot shown on the map. You can also visit their website if they have one. Should you get a security warning, that is because the site is HTTP and not HTTPS, which, in this case, is nothing to worry about:

The Internet and the Web are two different things. The Internet is the world-wide connection of computers/servers. The World Wide Web is on the Internet, but is not the only web; there are other webs, the most famous of which is the Dark Web. The Dark Web is not all drugs, stolen credit cards, stolen Paypal accounts, and assassins, it is also home to whistleblowers and organisations that are prohibited in certain countries, such as the BBC, Facebook and the CIA. Emails use the Internet, not the Web.
The Dark Web is not accessible via the usual browsers and search engines, it requires a special browser called Tor.
