A chance to practice playing traditional dance music from the British Isles and beyond with fellow musicians in the Wimbledon area.
If you play an acoustic instrument*, and know a few tunes already, are interested in practicing, improving and increasing your repertoire, join us for a new, informal and friendly weekly session.
* E.g.; Fiddle, flute, tin-whistle, banjo, guitar, pipes, mandolin, squeezebox.
Further details to be confirmed after expressions of interest, but for the moment it looks like being between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Sundays at a fairly central SW19 location.
If you feel that you might like to join us, please could contact me at steppingstonessessions@gmail.com and I will do my best to answer any questions promptly.
The following information might be useful.
• English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish traditional music will be the core focus, although excursions overseas will be welcomed.
• Musicians can choose to play by ear, or to read scores, or a combination of both.
• The session will not be taught in any formal sense; the aim of the session is to encourage the playing and learning of each player as part of a group, through practice and discussion.
• Proficiency will vary from player to player, as is often the case in the folk tradition; the main requirement is that all participants are respectful and supportive of each other’s abilities and desire to learn.
• There will be no charge for a first session and a £4 charge per subsequent sessions.
• Music stands will be provided for those who request them in advance.
• Tea, coffee and water will be available at no extra charge.
• If there are too many people, there will be a restriction on numbers according to venue, although the possibility of adding further dates might be considered. Too little interest and the group will discontinue.
Best wishes,
Paul

Wandsworth Kumon student offered Cambridge place
Great news for the Earlsfield Kumon centre, SW18! One of our maths students, Alexander Teixeira, has been offered a place at Cambridge University to study mathematics. Alex is very clever but also works very hard and the offer is well deserved.
This comes after last year when another of our Kumon students, Nicole, went to Oxford University.

PC Genius wanted for an hour or two
I have written a genealogy book and self published on LuLu. I had help but that is not now available. Now I want to publish it as a free ebook which I have tried to do on LuLu. The layout must be converted. There are instructions in tinsy tiny print. I have failed miserably. What I need is someone really able to do this as my eyes cannot cope anymore. I will pay the going rate (!?!?!) as I know that what needs to be done can be done very quickly by someone who knows what they are doing. There for hourly rate will be high. That's OK for 2 or 3 hours.
Please say who you work for so that I can check up on you as I want this done in my house.

Shoebox Appeal – Operation Christmas Child Alternatives
I think it’s around now that Schools and such start preparing shoeboxes full of gifts for the Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ shoebox appeal. I found out the truth about the Shoebox Appeal last year, and it might make some of you stop and think before you give to this charity. It’s not to say I believe the children they gift don’t deserve the shoeboxes – they certainly do – however, I don’t agree with the method that occurs when the shoeboxes are distributed. The organisation is "openly homophobic, it seeks to proselytise in a manner that most people, including liberal Christians, find unacceptable."
There are so many other charities that do similar, and I urge you to support those instead. The following articles highlight the reason why this charity should NOT be supported, and alternatives to consider:
