Considering what's at stake, strange. Not a single canvasser bothered to come to our house. Only Labour put leaflets through the door, funny enough mainly about Brexit and how much Helen Hayes will fight to remain in the EU. The Leaflet didn't bother to explain Labours "we get a better deal and then do referendum where we might stay neutral" policy.
Anyway, nothing from any other party, not even Greens who are strong around here.
I kind of expected party members to bang at my door every day.

Good morning to you all,
I’m a stranger and I don’t understand anything aboutto this whole affair:
a) What does BJ hope to have more than what Teresa May had already obtained?
b) is the suspension of the British Parliament legal or can it be likened to a "coup d'état"?
Does anyone know how to explain this to me in a few words?
Thank you . -
New group for tactical voting and vote swapping
Hi everyone,
https://www.scooploop.com/groups/sw-london-remainers-group-for-tactical-voting-and-vote/
Hello everyone, I've set up this new group because I wish to explain and encourage both tactical voting and vote swapping in my community. I'm terrified that if party tribalism prevails and people don't think very carefully about whether their vote is wasted in our first past the post system, then we'll end up with 5 years of liar Johnson and a horrendous Brexit. For example, I'm a natural Lib dem voter but don't think they can win in Battersea, so I have swapped my vote for big remainer Marsha de Cordova for a Lib dem vote in Lewes (by a Labour voter and climate activist down there), which hopefully results in two remain seats in Parliament.
I've also spoken to several of my family who are in seats where only the tories will win, so they need to vote swap too, and you can use this site https://www.swapmyvote.uk/.
What I did was find a seat where Lib dems are the only chance to unseat Tories (there are many in Devon/Cornwall I believe) but I happen to know Lewes well. I joined a local facebook group, made my offer of a swap and found a lady I trust completely. It's really quite straightforward and if enough people think about doing this, we can STOP BREXIT! Thank you and I hope you will join and invite your friends in the neighbourhood.
If you have already decided to vote tactically but would also like to express your true political inclination, then you might want to put one of these up in your front window, or the back of your car!
There is also a similar group on Next Door for those of you who are also on that platform. you need to logged in to your ND account for this link to work. https://nextdoor.co.uk/g/gwghqi36q/?is=nav_bar -
The myth of "getting Brexit done"
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/25/johnson-sowing-seeds-of-biggest-brexit-crisis-yet-warns-sir-ivan-rogers
This. Johnson's "get it done" policy will mean years of "cliff edge ahead". -
If labour would just make up their mind ...
Wasn’t the party line to stay neutral just two days ago?
-
Spotted all these in Wandsworth and Putney today 🙌
Whoever is responsible, I hope it persuades a few former Tories to vote tactically to get them out 👊🇪🇺👌
-
Anyone followed HoC this afternoon?
What a drama ... and does anyone have any predictions what will happen now?
-
So Oliver Letwin ( Ex Tory ) has tabled an amendment for today's vote which basically says this:
- Any vote on the Brexit deal is not a legal approval until all necessary legislation for Brexit has passed.
Despite Letwin being a bit of an odd fellow ( he would vote for Brexit ) this is extremely clever, because if it is accepted it means the Benn Act is still in place ( Brexit Deal has not been approved ) and Johnson needs to ask for an extension this weekend.
It also closes the ERG loophole of voting for the deal today ( hence disabling the Benn Act ) and then next week torpedoing the Withdrawal Agreement to crash out with no deal. -
So there we are, Saturday is the day.
Funny enough, if Brexit is not going to happen, we will have mainly to thank the DUP (of all people), however, if enough Labour MPs support Johnson we will get a pretty hard Brexit, another cliff-edge/no-deal at the end of 2020 and even more so probably another 5 to 10 years of Johnson government.
Thoughts? -
So the current situation looks like this:
- BJ will (maybe) bring forward a deal which pretty much looks like what May proposed originally ( separate custom union membership for NI ) , something the ERG and DUP opposed heavily.
- It's unclear how the DUP and ERG will respond this time
- up to 20 Labour MPs might vote for that nevertheless
- Many MPs will try to attach an amendment for a referendum on it, but Corbyn still demands an election first
- This could mean that BJ gets his deal through parliament ( IF he gets DUP on his side ) with some Labour help, most likely ending with him winning the next GE ( as the man "who got Brexit done, somehow ) and Labour going into some form of party-internal war.
Thoughts? -
EU may offer to extend deadline for Brexit deal to summer 2020
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/08/eu-may-offer-to-extend-deadline-for-brexit-deal-to-summer
And I think it is a very good idea to sort out that shit with some time, an extension of 12 weeks will get nowhere. -
"No grounds for weekend talks" says EU
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/04/boris-johnson-brexit-plan-european-commission-no-grounds-weekend-negotiations
Looks like the EU doesnt even consider BJ's "plan" for proper negotiations at this point ... -
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/02/irish-officials-dismiss-boris-johnson-brexit-offer-as-unacceptable
So there we have it (finally), quite a complicated mess with checkpoints on both sides of the border and a veto after 5 years for the NI assembly ( meaning in fact the DUP) -
Surpreme Court Ruling Discussion - and what it will mean for Brexit
The Supreme Court will rule at 10.30am this morning about
a) If it actually can rule about suspension of parliament
b) If the suspension of parliament was lawful
c) if it was unlawful, what follows from this
And for all of us, what will the ruling mean ( either way ) for Brexit? -
Interesting day ahead - Labour Conference, Surpreme Court
Looks like an interesting Monday:
1) Labour is voting on their policy for the next GE regarding Brexit, with the options
a) not deciding between remain/leave before election
b) campaigning for remain in next GE
b) would be a blow for Corbyn, as he is endorsing a)
a) probably only goes through if the unions overrule the CLPs which could cause massive uproar
it's also possible that they vote for both ....
2) Supreme Court might rule on parliament suspension, this could turn out either to be a blank cheque for BJ to power ahead or recall parliament, or rule against Johnson and be ignored. Everything's on the table. -
Corbyn suggests UK could be better off after Brexit if deal is right
And here we go again, Corbyn stating the same old legend about some wonderful Brexit deal which Labour will make possible.

A Deal can't really be made anymore before 31st October
More people are arguing that a deal can not be ratified before the end of October, so when Johnson says "out of the EU by 31st" he either does not understand this or means no-deal.

Hi everyone.
Someone on the above thread said remainer groups were acting aggressively while handing out EU flags at the above event. I had several friends from the Romford are that were there and they say it was all very friendly and there was no bad behaviour at all. If anyone went could they please give an honest account of what it was really like, warts and all if necessary. -
Interesting twist regarding no-deal/WD Agreement
This ia a rather dry read but the simplified essence is:
BJ could ask ERG & rest of Tories to to approve May's Deal in parliament ( with help of some from Labour ), then suspend parliament again and exit with no-deal ( without ratifying the deal or actually signing the agreement with the EU ), as the Benn Act only stops him from no-deal if parliament has not "agreed" to any deal.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/09/liberal-democrats-poised-to-back-revoking-article-50-brexit
While there will be enough people claiming "they don't respect the referendum etc " I think as a strategy it makes sense for them to position themselves like this. At least people know what they vote for regarding Brexit. -

MPs plan to prevent possible suspension of parliament
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/27/mps-pledge-form-alternative-parliament-prorogation-church-house-declaration-brexit
To me the discussion of suspending parliament feels a bit like a red herring, the real issue is to get legislation through to prevent Johnson from doing what he wants to do. But some of the legal discussions around this I do not get. Main issue remains that Johnson does not have to do anything to get his no-deal Brexit. -
Labour still waffling on regarding Brexit
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/aug/19/labour-may-stay-neutral-if-second-referendum-is-between-its-brexit-deal-or-remain
It is weird that Labour, 10 weeks before a no-deal Brexit seems to show no interest on having a real position on Brexit. Yes, the are against a no-deal Brexit but a general election seems their main goal. How they plan to win such an election is a mystery to me though. -

Cabinet of Horrors or last stand?
So what do we make of it? Is Boris' attempt to build a cabinet of ERG and other Brexiters a last stand to push through Brexit at any cost, or as some speculate a preparation for a general election?

Do you think trumps pro-brexit statements and his support for Farage are helping the brexiteers or rather scaring people off? Interested to hear what people think.

Bercow intends to stay on as speaker
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/may/28/john-bercow-reveals-plans-stay-commons-speaker
I think that's rather good news in the current situation, at least he will make sure that at some point a referendum amendment is picked for a vote and stop any future Pm from trying to just play for time and ignore parliament. -
My first thoughts about the EU Election
- Brexiteers have hardly gained anything compared to the last EU Election, votes mainly moved from UKIP to Brexit Party.
- Tories have lost most of the Leave Voters and many Remainers.
- Labour will be dead soon if they don't change course to clearly support remain.
- Remaining in the EU is important enough for a lot of people to switch their vote to other parties.
- With most likely some hard Brexiter as next Tory leader, more Tory MPs are going to support another referendum than before.
Thoughts? -
Who will now lead the Tory Party, and will it make any difference to remaining in the EU? (Edited)
My personal view is if Johnson becomes PM enough sensible Tory MPs will support either a second referendum or failing that even vote against there own party in a no-confidence vote. IMO it is still all to play for, but as long as the lunatics are still running the asylum who really knows.

The3Million Campaign (lobbying for EU citizen rights in the UK) estimates that around 100,000 EU people may have been refused the vote yesterday. That's shit loads! #DeniedMyVote became trending topic in twitter yesterday, which is an indication that vote refusal was a huge problem.
Thousands of people have complained to the electoral commission already. If anyone here knows of someone that had this problem let them know that they can download a complain letter here:

Labour’s cowardice comes from not sufficiently attempting to change people’s minds, and mythologising a white working class at the expense of precariat workers, young people and EU citizens. Corbyn is using these votes as a smokescreen to put forward his own agenda, but in doing so is playing into the hands of all those comfortable Conservative southern leave voters who won’t be harmed by Brexit in the same way.
