      Parking Meter and Machine Scams

We have been alerted to a scam in another part of the country involving parking meters.

The scam happens when you are approached by someone who pleads with you to help them with a parking meter that won’t accept their foreign card.

They ask you to use your card to make their car park payment, and they will give you the cash.
Once you have entered your card and PIN number, your card will not come out of the machine. They have used a device to capture it. They ring who they say is the meter company who tells you they will send an engineer to fix the machine and will contact you later to return your card.

Once you have left, they retrieve your card and use it.

      Protect Your Money

If you enter your card into any form of payment machine and are unable to retrieve it for any reason, you should immediately contact your bank to stop the card.

Whenever you enter your PIN number, ensure that nobody can see the number – use your other hand to block the view of any onlookers.

If you are approached by someone in the manner described above, please decline their request and report the suspicious behaviour to police.

      Apples

Apple Day is an annual festival in the United Kingdom organized by the UK charity and lobby group Common Ground. It was first held on October 21, 1990 and has been celebrated every year since then.

Common Ground focuses on promoting local distinctiveness. This phrase was coined by Common Ground in 1982 and basically refers to the concept of spirit of place. Apple Day was established as a holiday to celebrate local produce with the apple symbolizing local foods.

On this day, people are reminded of numerous local apple varieties that are often ignored in favour of several supermarket-friendly ones. Common Grounds links particular apple varieties with their place of origin in the hope that orchards will be recognized for their significant contribution to local distinctiveness as well as genetic, physical and cultural diversity.

Apple Day is celebrated in many places throughout the United Kingdom. Although it was first celebrated on October 21, many venues prefer to organize events on the weekend closest to October 30. Typical Apple Day events include, but are not limited to, apple inspired games such as apple bobbing, apple identification, cookery demonstrations, juice and cider tastings, fairs.

      Are you celebrating?

Trafalgar Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom on October 21 each year. It commemorates the victory won by the Royal Navy over French and Spanish forces at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The Battle of Trafalgar was the most decisive naval victory of the War of the Third Coalition. The Royal Navy led by Horatio Nelson and Cuthbert Collingwood defeated the combined fleets of the Spanish and French navies led by Federico Garvino and Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. Nelson made a significant contribution to the victory but was shot and killed during the battle.

Trafalgar Day was first celebrated in Trafalgar Square in London on October 21, 1896 and has been celebrated with great pomp throughout the British Empire for more than two decades after that. Celebrations usually included parades, formal dinners and other events.

Public celebration of Trafalgar Day declined during the First World War. However, it was still marked. In fact, Trafalgar Day is still observed in the United Kingdom although it is not a bank holiday.

Trafalgar Day is typically celebrated with military parades and solemn ceremonies which include wreath laying. Parades and ceremonies involve members of Sea Cadets, HMS Forward, and various civic organizations. The largest ceremonies take place in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Gibraltar.

      Resealable food wrappers that aren't

I've noticed that quite a few food items have wrappers that say they are resealable, but most of them aren't.
Last week I needed a new loaf of bread. I usually get Warburtons but one called Allinsons Scandalously Seeded loaf was on offer. On the end of the wrapper it said "resealable". So I bought it. Later on opened it, ate a few slices, went to close and reseal it to find it is just a normal plastic bread wrapper.
The same goes for McVities Ginger Pudding Cake. Says resealable on the wrapper but its just a normal wrapper. Getting the cake back in the wrapper after taking a slice is almost impossible unless you rip it a bit.
Even Cadburys Dairy Milk is getting in on the act, claiming their wrapper is resealable.
Some foods get it right like Pilgrims Choice cheese that has the plasic clip-it air tight reseal.

      World Food Day

is observed in over 150 counties around the world every year on October 16. This observance was created in November 1979 and the first events were organized in 1980.

The Hungarian Delegation headed by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food initiated the idea of establishment of World Food Day, as an observance highlighting the importance of investments in agriculture. He expressed this idea at the 20th General Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization and it was supported by the member countries. October 16 was designated to be World Food Day, since it's the anniversary of foundation of the organization in 1945.

Celebration of World Food Day annually adopts a different theme in order to draw public attention to the areas that need for action and the issues behind hunger and poverty. Most of the annual themes revolve around agriculture and investments in private sector. Many developing countries depend on agriculture and investments in private sector are frequently forgotten about.

National No Bra Day on October 13th encourages wearers to leave that bra at home.

The day promotes breast cancer awareness. It also helps raise money for research. Many women who have survived breast cancer are unable to go without a bra as they need it to hold their prosthesis after surgery. Additionally, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and No Bra Day should serve as a reminder for all women to be screened for breast cancer. Most types of breast cancer can be treated if caught early.

      World Thrombosis Day

is observed in many countries throughout the world on October 13. Its main goal is to raise public awareness of the deadly problem caused by defects in blood coagulation.

When a blood vessel is injured, the body uses special blood components, known as platelets or thrombocytes, and fibrin (a fibrous protein) to form a blood clot that prevents blood loss. However, sometimes blood clots form in the body even when a blood vessels is not injured. This condition is known as thrombosis.

Thrombosis may occur in veins or in arteries. Venous thrombosis causes congestion of the affected body part, while arterial thrombosis affects the blood supply, resulting in damage of the tissue supplied by the artery. Arterial thrombosis is a common cause of stroke and myocardial infarction. A piece of a blood clot can break off, travel through the blood stream and lodge somewhere else as an embolism.

World Thrombosis Day was founded in 2014 by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Its main goal is to disseminate information about thrombosis, including its causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

The observance is held on October 13 to honor the birth anniversary of Rudolf Virchow, a German physician and pathologist, known for coining the terms embolism and thrombosis, as well as describing the factors contributing to thrombosis. On this day, over 175 organizations around the world hold educational forums, information campaigns, and other events focusing on thrombosis.

      World Arthritis Day

is an annual awareness day observed on October 12 in many countries throughout the world. Its main goal is to disseminate information about joint disorders that are collectively known as arthritis, as well as to raise public awareness of challenges that people with arthritis have to face every day.

“Arthritis” is an umbrella term often used to describe any disorder that affects joints. Generally by arthritis people mean one of the diseases where joint pain is primary, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and others. However, arthritis can also be a secondary condition to a wide range of diseases, from psoriasis and celiac disease to Lyme disease and lupus. Overall there are over 100 types of arthritis.

Typical symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion, skin redness, warmth, and swelling of the affected joints. The disease typically becomes more common with age, but some of its types affect young people and even children and teenagers (for example, juvenile idiopathic arthritis). Arthritis is one of the most common causes of disability.

World Arthritis Day was created to raise public awareness of all forms of arthritis and emphasize the importance of early diagnosis of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. Some forms of arthritis, such as fibromyalgia, may remain undiagnosed for up to 5 years, and a delayed diagnosis makes it harder to treat the condition. is an annual awareness day observed on October 12 in many countries throughout the world. Go to work on an egg

World Egg Day is observed in many countries around the world on the second Friday in October. This holiday is dedicated to eggs and praises their ability to feed all people around the world.

World Egg Day was established in 1996, when the International Egg Commission dedicated the second Friday in October to celebration of eggs. This idea was supported by egg lovers and people connected with the egg industry from all over the world and this holiday became an international event.

Celebration of World Egg Day attracts public attention to eggs, as a good source of protein, vitamins, folic acid and other nutrients. Eggs have a vital role in feeding people around the world and they are always affordable.

Various eggs-related events are organized on this day. Everyone may enjoy cooking shows and learn new recipes for cooking eggs. Children are also welcomed to participate, that is why schools may organize cooking competitions for the best or the fastest omelet or any other egg dish.

      World Homeless Day

is marked by people around the world on October 10. It is dedicated to a global problem that affects most countries. The main goal of this international observance is to encourage people to change the lives of homeless people in their local community.

Homeless people are people who don’t have a permanent dwelling. Homelessness can be caused by many reasons, including, but not limited to, lack of affordable housing, forced eviction, gentrification, domestic violence, living with a disability or mental disorder, poverty, natural disasters, social exclusion, and more. According to 2005 statistics, an estimated 100 million people worldwide were homeless and 1 billion people lived as refugees, squatters or in temporary shelter, lacking adequate housing.

The concept of World Homeless Day was conceived in online discussions on the global issue of homelessness involving people from various parts of the world. It was marked for the first time on October 10, 2010. World Homeless Day is designed to raise awareness of homelessness as a global issue, to combat associated stigma (contrary to a popular misconception, not all homeless people are addicts or criminals), and to encourage people to get involved in responding to homelessness.

The best way to celebrate World Homeless Day is to support local service providers for homeless people. You can volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, donate clothes or food items, etc. Even if it seems like you’re not doing much, you’re still making a difference.

      Charity "Mary's Meals

World Porridge Day is observed annually on October 10. It was launched in 2009 as a fundraising campaign for Mary’s Meals, a Scotland-based charity which sets up school feeding programs in poor countries, where hunger prevents children from gaining an education.

Porridge is a staple food in many countries, including much of Africa and Northern Europe. It is made by boiling chopped, crushed, or ground starchy plants—typically grain—in water or milk. Grains used for porridge include oat, rice, barley, wheat, buckwheat, semolina, corn, sorghum, quinoa, and others. Some types of porridge have their own names such as Russian kasha, American grits or Italian polenta.

Why did Mary’s Meals create a holiday dedicated to porridge? The thing is that its largest school feeding programs are in Malawi and Liberia, where the children’s ration is based on maize porridge. World Porridge Day was created to show that a handful of porridge can make a difference and become a real salvation for a chronically hungry child.

On the occasion of World Porridge Day, the Scottish village of Carrbridge hosts the World Porridge Making Championship. The Championship was inaugurated in 1994 and has taken place alongside World Porridge Day since 2009. The winner of the competition is awarded a prize named the Golden Spurtle (a spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool used to stir porridge).

Most mornings I have to put lurcher dog's padded harness and coat (she has several) in the washing machine due to the horrendous rolling she does in foxes' poo - dog also has to be washed as best I can. House and car just reeks of it and it's not a pleasant aroma.

To be honest, not happy about putting in washing machine but needs must and I then do a short low wash with just bleach to hopefully clean the machine. Other than getting rid of dog (very tempted), any suggestions - would it be better to buy the anti-bacterial washing additive instead of the bleach second wash. I'm getting paranoid about it.

National Mouldy Cheese Day ------9th Oct. --- Really --- (Edited)

National Mouldy Cheese Day Some people think mouldy cheese is gross, but others enjoy its distinct taste and flavour immensely. The National Mouldy Cheese Day celebrated on October 9 is the perfect excuse for the latter to indulge themselves with gourmet cheese such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort.

Production of a large number of cheese varieties requires mould. It is mould that helps cheese develop a unique flavour. The moulds used in cheese making are completely harmless to eat. Blue cheeses are often considered “the mouldiest” because blue mould is more noticeable than white one. Blue cheeses also carry a more distinct smell than, for example, Camembert or Brie.

Blue cheese is veined or spotted throughout with blue, blue-green or blue-grey mould which is a result of the cheese being pierced with strains of Penicillium fungi. Some cheeses have fungi spores mixed in with the curds and others are injected with spores before the curds form.

Some of the best known blue cheeses are Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Blue Stilton, Bleu d'Auvergne, Cabrales, Dorset Blue Vinney, Fourme d'Ambert, Stichelton. Blue cheeses typically have salty and sharp flavor. They can be eaten by themselves or be melted or crumbled over or into foods. Blue cheese goes especially well with pears.

      Three hearts and nine brains

Octopus Day, sometimes referred to as National Octopus Day, International Octopus Day and even World Octopus Day, is observed annually on October 8. It is dedicated to one of the most unusual creatures that live on our planet.

Octopuses are soft-bodied, eight-limbed molluscs that belong to the class Cephalofoda, alongside squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids. They are among the oldest creatures on Earth; cephalopods have existed for 500 million years, and the oldest known fossil of octopus ancestors is almost 300 million years old. But octopuses may have actually existed for longer than that; it’s just hard to prove since octopuses are mostly soft tissue and their fossils are therefore relatively rare.

Their ancientness, however, isn’t the only thing that makes octopuses so amazing. These animals have three hearts, and each of their tentacles has thousands of chemoreceptors that allow octopuses taste what they touch. Moreover, octopuses can change their color as a form of camouflage and shoot the ink. All octopuses are venomous, but most species are not deadly to humans. The only exception is the blue-ringed octopuses whose venom can kill a human within minutes.

But that’s not all! Octopuses have a very high brain-to-body weight ration and a highly complex nervous system (for mollusks). They have a good memory (both short- and long-term) and an ability to distinguish between different geometric shapes. They have also been observed to play and use tools. Overall, octopuses are considered highly intelligent, but there has been an ongoing debate concerning the extent of their intelligence.

Such amazing creatures definitely deserve their own holiday! The best way to celebrate Octopus Day is to attend a public aquarium and observe octopuses, but we realize that not everyone has such an opportunity. Watching a documentary about octopuses is the next best thing. What you shouldn’t do on this day is eat sushi (or anything, actually) with octopus because it would be highly disrespectful.

Dinner/lunch/tea - what do you call it ?

When I was a child the midday/1pm meal was called dinner and the evening meal was tea.
Then when I went to senior school everyone was saying 'lunch' but i still called it dinner and tea.
Now because i sometimes meet up with friends during the day i say lunch and dinner - so when is my tea ?

      Just for me.

Frappé coffee (also known as café frappeé or Greek frappé) originates in Greece though the word frappé is French. When describing a drink, this word means “chilled”. Frappé is an iced coffee drink which is made from instant coffee and covered with foam.

Frappé was invented in 1957 in Thessaloniki during the International Trade Fair by an employee of the Nestlé company. He wanted to have an instant coffee during his break but couldn't find any hot water. So he used a shaker to mix instant coffee with cold water and ice cubes. This improvised drink turned out to be a success. It is one of the most popular drinks in modern Greece.

Greek frappé is typically made with spray-dried instant coffee, sugar, and water. Sometimes milk is added. The beverage can be flavored with liqueurs such as Baileys Irish Cream or Kahlúa. Outside Greece, the espresso version of frappé is popular. In the United States, the term “frappe” can be applied to various iced coffee beverages, either chilled or frozen. Starbucks has its own trademark for a line of frozen coffee drinks – Frappucino.

To celebrate the National Frappé Day, have a nice cup of iced coffee. You can top it with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, or a ball of ice-cream.
