WARNING! No right turn into Conduit Lane into Montagu Road

Many of you will remember when there were roadworks last year on the North/South Road and traffic was diverted via Conduit Lane they imposed a 'No Right Turn' into Montagu Road - enforced by CCTV. With hefty fines for breaches!

It is on again now and people are ignoring the signs. Like 'lambs to the slaughter', as soon as one car turns those behind just follow.

      Uppity Charity Shops

I wonder if charity shops are now getting too many donations and can afford to be very picky? last month I offered an extending dining table and a piano to Klasp in Enfield Church Street. The staff declined the table when I said it had some light scratches on it - they seem to only want it if it is in pristine condition. The piano they said they could sell (that doesn't need to be pristine) but while other organisations use two people to collect, they would need 4 people - the manager will call me when he has time. They still haven't called. I have found someone who wants the table and I phoned Walthamstow British Heart Foundation (we bought the piano from the Ilford branch) and Walthamstow BHF said their driver wouldn't be able to get it in their van. How about another branch? Oh no, only Walthamstow can pick up in Edmonton! So it's not just teenage gangs that don't allow others onto "their patch". I am disgusted with both charities. I will now see if any other organisations will "do me a favour" and make use of it.

      Cycle route roadworks

Continuing traffic chaos around Hertford Road Edmonton and the closure of the junctions with Bury Street/ Bounces Road and motorists using all the surrounding roads. This problem with drivers having stand-offs with other traffic trying to make every one back up has been non-stop for two months and is due to continue for more than 3 weeks more. If you don't have to drive near those roads then keep away, WELL AWAY.

      Use your local pharmacy

Pharmacy 2U are sending letters to persuade patients to get their prescriptions through them instead of using your local chemist. Please think carefully before signing with them or any online chemist. If you take your business away from your local chemist they may be forced to close and once they have gone they are unlikely to reopen. At the same time, the local pharmacies need to 'buck up their ideas'. I am fed up with calling in to collect a prescription that has been on the premises for a day or two and only then do they get it ready.

      Dog Microchips

Remember to update the details, mainly so your dog can be returned if lost but you could also end up being fined. This is a clip from a Welwyn local paper: Daniel Barrett of Haynes Close pleaded guilty to failing to update his dog’s microchip, and was fined £20 and ordered to pay £360 to Welwyn Hatfield Council.

      Cheap sherry

No, I'm not an alchoholic but does anyone know who sells cheap 'cooking' sherry. I don't want it for drinking but when I use pasta/curry/chilli sauces in jars or tins, I like to rinse the remains out with sherry (more tasty than water). I used to get Nobleman from Lidl at £2.99 a bottle and despite the price was an ideal product but they seemed to have stopped selling it. I don't see the point in buying good stuff just for cooking so if you know anyone who sells bargain sherry, please let me know. Thank you

      Cat advice

I noticed that there are a lot of posts regarding cats so I would like to ask your advice. I live in the middle of a terrace which backs onto another road of terraced houses. Consequently the gardens are a highway for a lot of cats. Most just make there way past but one cat has taken to sleeping on our garden bench occasionally and that is not a problem. Over the last year his visits have gradually become more frequent. He has slowly become less nervous and even lets us stroke him as we pass - and will 'allow' us to give him cat-treats. He looks well cared for but despite making enquiries, I have no idea where he comes from. But twice in the last couple of days he has just come into our kitchen and 'miaowed' for the treats. This in itself is not a problem but I don't want the cat adopting me - I'm not in a situation to have a pet and I certainly don't want to steal somebody elses. So, should I stop feeding him? Should I (gently) chase him away? What do you think I should do, please?

      Lea Valley car parking charges

Several car parks in Lea Valley have been handed over to Parking Eye who are now charging for what used to be FREE car parks. This applies to Myddleton House, Gunpowder Park and others. You need to check because some allow free motor bike and 'Blue Badge' parking and others don't. Some remain free to all. Some give the first hour in 24 free which suggests that if you parked for 30 minutes at 4pm one day and returned the next day at 3pm you would need to pay as it is within 24 hours. It would seem that there are different T's & C's at each location - all the better to catch you out and rip you off!

Monthly tea parties for older people - looking for new members in Enfield, Southgate and Edmonton

Supported by a network of volunteers, Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people aged 75 and over, who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month.

I am the coordinator for the Enfield 17 Group and am looking for older people to join my group. If you are in another area and interested there will be a local group so please get in touch.

One Sunday afternoon a month, our volunteer drivers enjoy taking their older guests to a volunteer host's home where they join a small group for tea, talk and companionship.

The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same and the groups are kept small so that everyone can join in easily and get to know each other properly.

It's a simple idea, but one that can make a big difference. Our friendship groups represent the perfect opportunity to get out of the house, make new friends within the local community, and generally brighten up a weekend.

Guests are not expected to host any of the tea parties and the service is free.

So if you are or know a older person who might like to come to a tea party, or if you would like to volunteer as a driver or a host please see the website (http://www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/) for full details and get involved.

Please do think about any older people you know who could benefit as we would love to have them join in.

I have been volunteering for the charity for about 7 years now and I enjoy the tea parities and the difference they make to the guests. When I first wanted to get involved in something charitable I was worried I could not commit to something too time consuming, as I have a full time job, but I have found that driving for the group once a month fits into my schedule easily and I look forward to the tea parties very much.

If you want to get involved please do take a look at the website (http://www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/) and join us!

      Homebase Clearance Outlet

I went to Homebase at New Southgate yesterday and it is a clearance store. They don't sell the full range of stock and advertised offers but what they do sell is all reduced - at least 10% but most of it is around 20-30% including decorating, tools, garden stuff and homewear.
The Walthamstow Homebase closed down and is now a similar but independant store.

      Enfield Town

When I moved to this area in 1969 Edmonton Green was in the process of losing a vibrant and popular market to be replaced by a purpose-built slum (there have been some improvements since then). But there was always Enfield Town to go to - a busy market and shopping high streets (Church Street and London Road). Now as you travel through The Town, barely half of the shops are still open and seven or more of those are 'charity shops'. I have nothing against them, in fact I love browsing in them, but a proliferation often indicates a situation where other retailers are reluctant to go. What do you think ought to be done to revive Enfield and Edmonton or are High Streets as we know them consigned to history along with milkmen and bread deliveries and police stations?

      Offered: logs and branches

I recently had my Twisted Willow lowered and was left with a few branches and about 40 logs - see picture. I was just going to get rid of them but someone took a few saying they would be painted to make unusual Christmas decorations. If that idea appeals to any other Scoopers you are welcome to have some or all - I am near Hertford Road N9 just north of Edmonton Green.

      Local pharmacies

Wherever possible, I use local shops and businesses but they need to compete to retain my custom. As I collect prescriptions and medication for a number of friends and relatives I use several pharmacies around Edmonton and Enfield but without exception they don't try to do better than online pharmacies who will collect prescriptions and deliver (at no cost) directly to customers. It drives me mad when I hand in a prescription to the chemist and say I will be back in 15 minutes. Half-hour later I call back and only then do they start to fill the prescription. I am told they don't have enough but 'the rest will be in after 11 tomorrow'. I come back at 2.30 and then they tell me the meds didn't come in but they should be in at 4.30. Why didn't they phone or text me and save me a wasted trip? When the NHS starts restricting the number of outlets that dispense prescriptions these chemists are going to want the customers to fight to save their businesses.

      Anyone want an ASDA trolley?

Last month I came home and found an abandoned ASDA shopping trolley in the road outside my house. I phoned ASDA Edmonton Green and they said they would arrange its collection. A week later I phoned again and they said they would arrange for its collection, again. A week after that I phoned their HO and after a long conversation about recovery companies, unbelievably they said give it to a passing scrap merchant!!! Before I do that is there anyone who would like it - I am in N9 near the junction of Hertford Road and Bury St. I'm not sure how you send a personal message but if someone does that I can arrange collection.

      Old Town Photos

Take a look at francisfrith.co.uk For those of you that don't know the name his ambition was to photograph EVERYWHERE; towns, villages, streets especially throughout England. He eventually had a team of photographers who travelled the country. His archive of pictures are now available 'free to view' to everyone. You can even pick a picture and send an e-postcard of where you were born, had a holiday etc. There are thousands and thousands of photos all free to look at. There is an option to buy prints but there is no pressure to do so. I have spent (wasted?) many an hour looking at places from my past and present.

      Ponders End Traffic Chaos reminder

As from this Monday, Ponders End High Street is closed to ALL traffic, INCLUDING BUSES, for 6 weeks. If you need to travel anywhere north of Edmonton Green (along the Hertford Road) especially by bus, towards Waltham Cross - and journies in reverse - you need to check out diversions, closures and alternatives and certainly add LOTS of extra time to get to your destination. Also a roundabout has been installed at the junction of Nags Head Road/Scotland Green Road so traffic should be aware that when travelling from Ponders End towards Chingford, vehicles joining from Scotland Green will have 'right of way'.

      Ponders End Traffic Chaos

At the end of this month most of Ponders End will be a 'no-go' area for traffic INCLUDING buses! Bus routes 279 & 349 & 191 when travelling north from Edmonton will turn right at Nightingale Road/ Picketts Lock Lane/ Meridian Way and Nags Head Road and the same in reverse. The junction of Lincoln Road & ponders End is to be closed off. There are various other 'improvements' so do check out how this will affect your travel plans.

      Disabled Persons Parking Bays

LB Enfield now have a number of 'dedicated' residential bays that can only be used by the resident at that address and NOT by other Blue Badge holders. Because, apparentley, there is no legal obligation to display a sign to that effect, the Council have decided nt to install one. The only difference between a 'dedicated' bay and a normal bay is where the word DISABLED is painted on the ground is there is also a number e.g. DISABLED 073. Common decency stops most disabled drivers from parking in another persons bay (in 15 years of having a Blue Badge I have never used another's residential bay) but if you park in a 'dedicated' bay you can be prosecuted.
