This guy is making rounds in the neighbourhood trying to sell his story about him locked out of his house and needing money to go to his work place to collect keys... Not a word about calling a locksmith.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before and I missed it.
Can anyone recommend someone to do painting/decorating and general jobs. We need someone to repaint a basement flat and do some general repairs. Reliable is most important and obviously not over-expensive. Thanks

Please, please be generous if you see a homeless person over the next couple of days. Even if it's just a cup of tea. It must be awful to live on the streets, especially at this time of the year. Merry Christmas 🎄
Looking for a unique last minute Xmas present? This lovely watercolour was created and painted by my father (now age 90) who has spent many years using his talent as an artist to paint scenes of some of his favourite places. Having spent many happy hours in and around Wandsworth common, the idea grew to paint a map
Of the area with cameos of some of the most well known landmarks. It's the ideal gift for anyone who shares his passion for our beautiful common and would like to have something which is so unique and special.

Turkey: Fresh or frozen? (Edited)
Christmas lunch duties this year has fallen to me. I'm going to stay traditional and cook a turkey. Just wondering if it makes much difference between a fresh and frozen one? Also any tips of where's best to buy locally. I will be scouring the internet for cooking tips but if want to throw some of those in for good measure i'll take them. ;)
'My Local Culture' Film Competition for children and teens
I thought this could be of interest to anyone with children who are showing an interest in film/media field for their career (particularly those in secondary school).
The Mayor is running a competition, inviting all young Londoners to make a short film celebrating why they love where they live. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to start thinking about culture and why it's important in communities! Primary and secondary school students can enter a film up to 3 minutes long following the theme of 'My Local Culture' with the chance to win filmmaking equipment and professional training. Deadline is 31st Jan. https://www.intofilm.org/competitions/11

Royal College of Arts £108m building
The Royal College of Arts have submitted plans for a new £108 million building, in the campus off Battersea Bridge Road.
I think it's hideous. Has anyone been involved in the talks surrounding this or know where I can dispute? I am not an immediate neighbour to the area but I do spend a lot of my time in Battersea as I have family there.

A serious WiFi flaw was discovered affecting all WiFi devices. (Edited)
This has been circulating for a few days on the news now but a cool summary was sent to me by Norton today which I would like to share with the community.
A serious new vulnerability called KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attacks) was announced recently, likely impacting anyone who uses Wi-Fi. All Wi-Fi connection points and devices could be vulnerable—your local coffee shop, home, or workplace connection.
KRACK can allow attackers access to important information like credit card numbers, passwords, and emails transmitted over Wi-Fi networks. This vulnerability can also allow attackers to potentially infect your devices with malware or ransomware.
How to help protect your devices against KRACK
• Wi-Fi users should immediately update their Wi-Fi-enabled devices as soon as a software update is made available. Wi-Fi enabled devices are anything that connects to the Internet — from laptops, tablets, and smartphones to other smart devices such as wearables and home appliances.
• Only browse secure websites whose URL begins with HTTPS. HTTPS-enabled websites provides an extra layer of security by using encryption.
• HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - Consider using a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN), to help protect your data against this new threat.
Note: Changing your Wi-Fi password will not prevent attacks.
I should say that Internet providers like BT and Virgin all have remote update procedures of their routers, so they are likely to roll out the required fix automatically. Smaller providers are not likely to do that but best to enquire about this with them.
The flaw and the theory behind the potential atack has been discovered literally days ago but as everything in the IT world it is likely to be exploited within a few weeks if not days from now on. Especially true to public locations and densely populated neighbourhoods where WiFi signals easily cross into other people's homes.
Don't let your computer go to sleep too fast...
Hi All,
In a follow up from another forum about a computer with a solid state drive that was performing miserably slow despite plentiful space and no malware...
The problem turned out to be that of power settings which made the computer go to sleep within a minute on batteries and 15 minutes on mains. I've seen an identical problem in a computer with an old-fashioned gyroscopic drive but it did not immediately occur to me that latest solid state drives would also be affected. Then why would not they? Modern computers do A LOT of background maintenance and flexible AI technologies make that maintenance take place when a computer is not being actively used or is running under low load. Updates, drive cleanup, security scans, drive data repositioning are just a few that need to take place sooner or later. It makes no difference if this is a PC or a Mac the myriads of tasks are very similar. So, a computer that has very little time to itself will eventually start to run those tasks as soon as it has ANY chance of doing that and that means WHILST a user is trying to get some work done. It is a bit difficult to recommend a good amount of time to give the computer on its own to "waste" the energy and may need to be a bit of a trial and error but if you have tried everything else and the computer is still inexplicably slow then try setting power management to prevent your computer from going to sleep at all on mains power. Let it run for 24h and see if things have improved. Certainly worth noting that going to sleep on mains power after just 10-15 minutes or less is not a good idea. Try 1-2 hours instead. You can let the screen to be shut but let the computer rumble on for a bit longer.
Just wanted to thank the wellcome committee made up od Paula, Kate, Owen and David.
I hadn't read those posts. Sorry!
Glad we are back online alla Streetlife. Nextdoor should concentrate on the US not break up our extended community.
One suggestion for Scooploop: Perhaps it could be useful connect with other regions as well, like someone looking for recommendations on the concerned local area.
Hello... have not been on one of these neighbourhood sites before. Looks good. So ... just saying hi ... for now.... and looking forward to future posts
This may seem too obvious but check the validity of your backups. Yesterday a Time Machine (Apple) backup was found to be a dud despite no complaints from the iMac. This of course applies to all computers, phones and tablets! Have more than 1 backup for better protection as the cost of an extra hard drive is peanuts when it is compared to the cost of the uncertainty when a recovery is needed.
Plan ahead!
Hi,just thought I would mention that last year where I work we decided not to send Xmas cards to each other(we are a large team)and so instead we bought an item for the local food bank, the collection ended up quite large and the food bank was really grateful,so we’ve decided to do the same again this year,I think it celebrates what Christmas is all about.
I am looking for recommendations for a company to renovate my upstairs bathroom. I would like the whole interior ripped out and completely replaced. I would appreciate design help with flooring, tiles, shower and bath as well - after searching through multiple bathroom websites I'm still none the wiser. Thank you.
HP printers on WiFi are suddenly not printing from your Apple device? Read on...
Turns out that Apple has messed up WiFi printing for HP printers via one of their recent updates. The symptoms are that you can see the printer in your list but when you send a page to be printed it would not go though fore the timeout whilst attempting to connect to that printer. Similarly if you try to print from your Mac laptop or desktop and that simply not happening but you can scan (thus you know that the connection is working) then you may have this problem.
There is no fix for the moment but a weird workaround if you really HAVE to print there and then. Nope I'm not talking about USB as it is not a WiFi connection and USB links are not affected. Check your printer configuration for Web Services and allow EPrint. This will issue your printer with an email and then anything sent to that email will be printed directly via HP servers.
Scooploop looks uncannily similar to the old Streetlife site. What could be going on here I wonder?
Without a search engine and plenty of scope for id theft, I had pretty much given up on Nextdoor. So this new site may have arrived to save us.
My son is struggling with his maths so we're going to get a tutor in to help. Can anyone recommend one? He just needs a bit of extra guidance outside of school to help him with homework and to grasp the more complex bits. Thank you!

I felt compelled to write a review as we just had such a lovely trip to this museum. They are running a Michael Morpurgo exhibition at the moment so if you have junior-age kids and they have studied the books at school then they will enjoy it.

Sandwich Thiefs King George Park.
I know it isn't crime of the century, but i was just having my lunch break sitting on bench in King George park and two "little blighters" on their bikes came over and snatched my Pret sandwich. I am guessing they were probably after a bigger prize, but i grabbed my bag sensing they were up to no good. Both on bmx type bikes, 1 white 1 mixed race probably 14yrs.

Any musicians (vocalists and/or people with a home studio) would like to collaborate on some level? We can jam for fun or record things together. Let me know. I am a songwriter/guitarist
Cheers.
Having lost Streetlife I was afraid I'd lost my 'computer guru' ! However I am glad to report that Shahid Rafiq is still around and he rescued me from a problem partly caused by Virgin and partly my own ignorance. He is willing to visit well into the evening which is really helpful too.
