      Mulled Cider

On September 30, the National Hot Mulled Cider Day is celebrated throughout the United States. It is the perfect occasion to enjoy a cup or two of warm spiced cider in cool weather.

Hot mulled cider is a delicious beverage that will make crisp September afternoons march warmer. It is a popular fall and winder drink often associated with end of the year holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. It is made with apple cider (or apple juice for the non-alcoholic variation), sugar, and spices.

Hot mulled cider can be easily made at home. In a large saucepan, combine 2 quarts apple cider, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 tsp whole cloves, 1 tsp whole allspice, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1 dash nutmeg. Bring to boiling, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and pour into mugs. Garnish with orange wedges before serving.

Sometimes liquor is added while preparing this drink. For example, you can make hot mulled cider with rum. Stud 1 apple with 2 tsp whole cloves. In a medium pot, combine 2 quarts apple cider, the studded apple, 1 thinly sliced orange, 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1 tsp allspice, 1 dash nutmeg. Bring to boil, simmer for 10 minutes. Strain, add 1 cup dark rum and pour into mugs. Garnish with cinnamon sticks.

      Tomatoes

Unbelievably, spraying a dilute solution of aspirin onto your tomato plants (we are talking half a soluble tablet per litre of water) is capable of causing their sugar content to soar one and a half times and boost their Vitamin C content 50%.

This treatment can even make your plants more resistant to cold, drought and (not that we'll ever need it in the UK) heat stress too. According to one trial this can even result in a 47% less incidence of late blight, the scourge of tomato growers,

      World Rivers Day

World Rivers Day, annually celebrated on the last Sunday in September, was created to improve and protect the rivers around the world.

The history of World Rivers Day begins in 2005, when the United Nations launched the Water for Life Decade. This campaign was created to raise public awareness of the need of better care for all water resources around the world. Internationally renowned environmentalist and river advocate Mark Angelo responded the UN's initiative and established World River Day.

The proposal for establishment of a global event for rivers is based on another ecological observance, also initiated and coordinated by Mark Angelo. Back in 1980 he established BC Rivers Day, that is observed in British Colombia, Canada. The inaugural event of World Rivers Day was organized by activists from around the world in 2005. Its popularity grew and the first event was celebrated in 12 countries. In 2012 more than 60 countries observed this day.

Celebrate World Rivers Day by participating in local events, organized near the rivers. These events range from fish enhancement projects to river cleanups. You may also organize your own event, and don't forget to register it at www.worldriversday.com.

Asked a stupid question day Sept. 28th

Ask a Stupid Question Day is an informal holiday that is celebrated in some American schools on September 28 (or on the last school day of September when September 28 falls on the weekend).

The holiday dates back to the 1980s. It was created by a group of teachers to encourage kids to ask more questions in the classroom. The problem is that kids often fear that their question is stupid and hold back because they are afraid of being ridiculed by classmates. But asking questions is an integral part of the educational process and an important source of feedback for teachers.

Ask a Stupid Question Day is an opportunity for shy kids to speak up and ask any question they were afraid to ask, no matter how dumb and irrelevant it may seem. This day aims not only to encourage students to be more inquisitive, but to create a positive classroom environment where children are not afraid of being laughed at.

Some schools outside the United States have started to celebrate Ask a Stupid Question Day, too. It is reported that some British and Indian schools have adopted it.

      Glaucoma/visual field test

Yesterday I went to the PRU at Farnborough for my annual eye check. I wasn't asked to do a visual field test as I usually do. Eventually the consultant yelled my name from right across the waiting area and then disappeared into one of the rooms. Fortunately I'm mobile enough to run and see where he went but others might not be able to. When I got in there he said the good news was there was no more nerve damage - I thought that was decided by the visual test. Then he had a quick look in my eyes and said "oh, you've got a tiny bit of age related macula disease...nothing to worry about, just eat plenty of greens and broccoli. See you in 12 months...and with this I was shown the door. I was so surprised/shocked I just left.

Now I've had time to think about it I'm bloody annoyed with him and myself.

Does anyone know if they can now determine nerve damage without the visual test?

      World Pet Day

Pets, or companion animals, play a very important role in many people’s lives. Some people even regard them as family members. So it’s not surprising that many pet owners (or “guardians”) celebrate World Pet Day. This unofficial holiday has several possible dates, the most popular ones being September 27 and November 30.

The inaugural World Pet Day was observed on September 27. It was initiated by the non-profit organizations PVBLIC Foundation and +SocialGood in collaboration with Klooff, a social media website designed for sharing moments with pets. They created the holiday to celebrate all of the happiness that pets bring to their owners, as well as to raise awareness of animal abuse.

The organizers suggested that animal owners visit the World Pet Day website, take a selfie with their pets, share the resulting postcard online, and tag three friends, asking them to follow suit. In addition, all participants were encouraged to donate to the Humane Society International or other organizations dedicated to saving domesticated animals from cruelty and abuse.

Another World Pet Day is celebrated on November 30. There’s no information on who created it or why this exact date was chosen, but it seems to originate from the Russian-language segment of the Internet. Anyway, it’s really great that pet owners have more than one occasion to celebrate their animal companions.

      PFIs

The NHS is forced to pay billions of pounds to private companies. [1] All because of contracts - called “PFIs” - that trap our NHS in debt for decades. [2] It’s money that could be used to train nurses or treat cancer patients - wasted.

Now experts have revealed the full cost to our NHS for the first time - and the waste is shocking. [3] But there’s a simple solution: the government could allow the NHS to buy their way out of these bad contracts. It would save the NHS billions of pounds. [4]

It’s common sense. But unless there’s public pressure to back it up, the government could ignore it. That’s why Catherine, who worked for the NHS, started a petition calling on the government to act. If hundreds of thousands of us pile in, it could force ministers to do the right thing.

      Please sign

      Pancake anyone?

National Pancake Day Date in the current year: September 26, 2019
National Pancake Day Pancakes are one of the favourite breakfast foods in North America. No wonder there is a holiday dedicated to them. The National Pancake Day is celebrated throughout the United States each year on September 26.

Pancakes are round, flat cakes prepared from a thick batter made of flour, milk, and eggs. They are cooked on a frying pan or griddle. American pancakes typically contain a raising agent therefore they are thicker than unleavened British pancakes. They are usually about 1/3 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter.

Pancake batter can have other ingredients stirred in such as buttermilk, yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, apples, bananas, chocolate chips, sugar, cheese, and spices (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg). Thus pancakes can be sweet or savoury.

Pancakes are typically consumed at breakfast. They can be topped with maple syrup, butter, jam, honey, peanut butter, cane syrup, molasses, whipped cream, powdered sugar, fruit, nuts. Unsweetened pancakes can be served with sides such as eggs, bacon, or sausage.

To celebrate the National Pancake Day on September 26, cook your favourite kind of pancakes for breakfast. By the way, it is interesting to know that there is one more holiday dedicated to pancakes. Shrove Tuesday is generally referred to as Pancake Day because it is traditionally celebrated in many countries by eating pancakes.

Vanishing coins and mysteriously changing ticket

Decided to buy a few lucky dip tickets for Wednesday's Lotto draw. Only because it's a "must be won" draw. I'm always crystal clear what I'm asking for, specially when its not for tonight. "Can I have a lucky dip for Wednesday lotto please". If they query I say, "yes for tomorrow".
I was wearing my big water resistant coat with big pockets that you can put a hand straight down into. No way any coins could fall out. I had 3 poind coins in the jpocket and bought a ticket from Londis. All went well. Then I went along to a shop called Harry Allsorts. As I only had 1 pound, I paid with a fiver. The shopkeeper handed me the ticket which I looked at and thought the numbeers were similar to the other shop, and he handed me 3 poind coins in change. I put my hand with the coins into my coat pocket and let the drop onto the other coin. I could feel all 4 coins with my fingers.
I'd only walked a few yards from the shop when I put my hand back into the pocket thinking I could buy one more in Sainsburys as I'm doing food shopping in there anyway. Put my hand in and felt, just 1 coin. The other 3 had vanished. I felt all around incase there was a hole, also checked all other pockets incase I have become Dynamo. Have absolutely no idea where they vanished to.
When I got home another strange thing had happened. Took the 2 tickets out of my inside coat pocket and the 2nd one is now a Euromillions for tonight. How did that happen?

Amended Advice Issued After Cars Are Stolen In Burglaries

Amended Advice Issued After Cars Are Stolen In Burglaries
Thames Valley Police is issuing advice to owners of high powered vehicles following a series of burglaries.
Over the last three months, over 30 burglaries have been committed across the south east of the Thames Valley area. These are being investigated as linked.
Houses with high powered vehicles parked outside are being targeted in this series of crimes. Offenders are breaking into these houses, searching downstairs for the car keys and then using them to steal the vehicle parked outside.
The burglaries have taken place predominantly across Wycombe, Chiltern & South Buckinghamshire, Windsor & Maidenhead and Slough.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Gill Fox, based at High Wycombe police station, said: “This burglary series is understandably concerning for the local community and my team are conducting a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
“While falling victim to a burglary is fortunately rare, I would like to encourage the owners of high powered vehicles to consider the following steps to help reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crime.
“If you have a garage, park your vehicle inside when it’s not in use so that it is not visible from the road. If you park your car on a driveway, consider blocking any high powered vehicles that are more desirable to thieves with other vehicles or equipment.
“Wheel clamps and steering wheel locks can be purchased, putting a barrier in place for thieves who intend to steal the car. Finally, don't store your keys near the front door or somewhere that they can be easily seen, keep them somewhere that you wouldn’t expect to find them and if you can, consider placing them upstairs.”

Is Deliveroo muscling in on Just Eat?

Not that long ago if you wanted a traditional takeaway like Chinese, Indian, Burger or Fried Chicken, Just Eat was the website to look on. If you wanted something from a proper restaurant, say Mexican, Italian or Thai you would look at Deliveroo.
But now more and more of the traditional takeaways are also on Deliveroo. Are they muscling in on Just Eats territory?
Also for three times now I've had to abandon an order on Just Eat because "the restaurant is currently not taking orders" usually right at the payment stage. But then I have gone to Deliveroo and ordered without a hitch.

      Pot Pie Day 23. Sept.

The National Great American Pot Pie Day is celebrated every year on September 23. This informal food related holiday was created in 2002 by Marie Callender's, the pot pie and frozen food company.

Pot pie is a culinary term that typically refers to a type of meat pie with top crust generally made from flaky pastry. Some pot pie variations do not require a bottom crust and thus are similar to a baked casserole rather than a traditional pie.

To celebrate the National Great American Pot Pie Day, treat yourself to a delicious pot pie. You can either buy it or cook yourself. Here is an easy chicken pot pie recipe for you.

In a saucepan, combine 1 pound cubed chicken breasts, 1 cup frozen green peas, 1 cup sliced carrots, and 1/2 cup sliced celery. Add water to cover and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and drain.

In another saucepan, melt 1/3 cup butter, add 1/3 cup chopped onion and cook until onion is soft. Stir in 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/4 tsp celery seed. Slowly stir in 1 3/4 cups chicken broth and 2/3 cup milk. Simmer over medium-low heat until thick.

Put chicken mixture in 9-inch unbaked pie crust. Pour hot liquid mixture over and cover with another 9-inch unbaked pie crust. Seal edges, cut away excess dough and make some small slits in the top. Bake at 425 °F for about half an hour.

Time to get a Smart Meter

Had an email last week from Shell Energy that was a bit waffly but basically said the Smart Metering Systems ltd would be contacting me about installing a Smart Meter. It is one of the new 2nd generation meters that will now still work when I change suppliers. So this time I'm happy to go ahead.

Girl from SMS phoned today to book me in for a date in October. So many questions to answer including one I didn't know the answer too. Is the emergency cut off lever by the gas meter red or yellow? Apparently it depends which engineer I get.

I almost got a Smart Meter installed a few years ago before I was aware of the issues. A man from Siemens turned up but decided he couldn't do it until I had the house completely rewired. I spoke to my brother who is a qualified electrician. He said that's rubbish.
