International Animals Rights Day
Date in the current year: December 10, 2020
International Animal Rights DayEvery year International Animal Rights Day is celebrated on December 10. This observance coincides with the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared in 1948, and this has been made deliberately.
On December 10, 1948 the UN General Assembly adopted and declared the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to prevent the repetition of World War II and concentration camps. But some years ago activists demanded expansion of the Declaration, stating that animals also have rights not to suffer pain and die because of human activity. At that time the term of speciesism was coined in order to talk about discrimination of the sentient beings due to the species they belong to. Animals can't protect themselves from people, who think that they are superior just because they were born like this.
Observance of International Animal Rights Day draws public attention to the issues of speciesism and discrimination. Annually numerous campaigns are organized on December 10 in order to recognize animal rights, stop deliberate cruelty and killing animals.
There's also a number of other days dedicated to protection of animals. These are World Animal Day, World Day for Laboratory Animals and International Homeless Animals Day. -

International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development Date in the current year: December 5, 2020
International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social DevelopmentInternational Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on the international level every year on December 5. This day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 to encourage spreading the information about volunteering for economic and social development.
International Volunteer Day is celebrated to draw public attention to the work that volunteers do and their contribution to the achievement of special goals, called the Millennium Development Goals. Volunteers around the world make it possible to combat poverty, environmental degradation, illiteracy, hunger, diseases and discrimination against women. Thanks to their work numerous foundations, faith groups, media, sports and recreational organizations are often involved in the volunteering.
The United Nations Volunteers annually awards the Online Volunteering Award to recognize the contributions of online volunteers towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. This program also demonstrates the efficiency of the work that volunteers do. -

Philip Green’s company Arcadia - that owns high street chains like Topshop and Dorothy Perkins - has collapsed and gone into administration. 13,000 long-serving employees look set to lose their jobs. And thousands of staff pensions are at risk.
MPs and trade unions are calling on the boss Philip Green to use his vast £930 million personal fortune to plug the £350 million shortfall in the company’s pension scheme. So thousands of hardworking employees don’t lose out on the retirement income they deserve.
All that’s missing is the voice of the public - potential customers he’ll want to keep on side. Imagine if hundreds of thousands of us come together to demand Philip Green does the right thing and plugs his company’s pension shortfall. It could be enough to make him act.
So will you sign the petition calling on Arcadia boss Philip Green to use his personal fortune to make sure his employees’s pensions don’t suffer?

World Computer Literacy Day Date in the current year: December 2, 2020
World Computer Literacy DayWorld Computer Literacy Day is observed annually on December 2. It was originally launched by NIIT, an Indian skills and talent development company, in 2001.
NIIT is an abbreviation for National Institute of Information Technology. The company was established in 1981 by Rajendra Singh Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani, two alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi. They conceived a franchising model in IT education, setting up nine educational centers by 1987. Currently, NIIT Limited offers learning management and training delivery solutions, while its subsidiary NIIT Technologies offers IT, business consulting and outsourcing services.
NIIT launched World Computer Literacy Day to mark its 20th anniversary, and in response to research suggesting that the majority of computer users around the world were male. Although the situation has changed since then, World Computer Literacy Day still strives to encourage the development of computer and technological skills among women and children in India.
Among its other goals are to celebrate computers and their role in people’s lives, improve IT education, and raise awareness of the importance of improving digital literacy in underserved communities worldwide. -

Just signed the petition "Give NHS staff free hospital parking" and wanted to ask if you could add your name too.
When visiting hospital I would be happier to pay the parking charges if hospitals would benefit but in most cases some big company lining their pockets.
To pay for parking at your work place is the last straw.

Covid vaccines petition (Edited)
Covid vaccines could save millions of lives -- but there's a catch.
The vaccines are owned by Big Pharma giants and they can’t produce enough for everyone fast -- the world's richest countries have already bought most of the doses, leaving poorer countries facing a massive shortfall.
But it doesn't have to be like this. In days, governments will vote on a global plan to suspend all patents for Covid-19 vaccines, allowing production to be massively scaled up. Even the poorest could have access!
Let's make it happen! Add your name to demand vaccines for all, starting by scrapping the patents, and then pass this on -- when we reach 1 million signatures, Avaaz will deliver our call to the crucial summit:
Sign now: Share the vaccine with the world!
Pharma giants argue they need patents to reward their research with exclusive profits. But these vaccines were developed with billions of dollars of public money, and countless lives hang in the balance.
Patents must be lifted -- and it's happened before. In 2001, after years of public pressure, the countries of the world agreed to free HIV/Aids treatments from patents, allowing affordable, generic versions to be made, saving millions of lives. Now we must do it again.
India and South Africa, supported by many developing nations, have just tabled an emergency proposal at the World Trade Organisation to temporarily suspend the patents for Covid-related vaccines and treatments, until the pandemic is over.
Governments will vote in days - so let’s create a huge wave of public support to help pass the emergency proposal, and make Covid treatments available to everyone! Add your name and share with your friends:
Sign now: Share the vaccine with the world!
Throughout the pandemic, our movement has fought for those hit hardest. We’ve pushed for global cooperation and debt relief, and donated millions to help the most vulnerable. Now, with vaccines arriving in record time, let's show up again to ensure no one is left behind. We have a once-in-a-life opportunity to see the world coming together to fight for one shared goal. Let's grab it!
With hope and determination,

Would this rule change improve football at every level?
At present there is a formula.
Fouling an opposition player once is noted by the referee.
The offender stays on the pitch.
Commit another bad foul on an opposition player, and the same offender gets a yellow card, but stays on the pitch.
[ and may be substituted so another team member can come on and carry on fouling ].
Suggestion:
Any football player receiving a yellow card receives a 10 minute sending off to the "sin bin" and may not be substituted.
So once he/she comes back on, one more foul and he/she is sent off. This discussion is now closed.

World Television Day Date in the current year: November 21, 2020
World Television DayWorld Television Day is one of the UN international observances. It is celebrated by all member states on November 21.
The date of the celebration was chosen to commemorate the first World Television Forum, that was held on November 21-22, 1996. The leading and the most influential representatives of the mass media participated in the forum, that was organized by the UN. They gathered to discuss the increasing importance of the television in the modern world and the possible ways of strengthening their cooperation in this sphere.
The UN calls on member states to organize the appropriate events to celebrate this day. One of UN's proposition was exchanging the TV programs, dedicated to the problems of safety, peace, development and cultural education. Television shouldn't become the means of spreading of the inhumane materials, materials about intolerance and stereotypes. Television has a big potential role in sharpening the focus on many major issues, that is why initiation, as well as celebration of this day, is an important step towards its implementation. -

I’ve got an exciting update. The government has accepted changes that will make it harder to sign trade deals that harm our food and animal welfare standards. [1] It’s a step in the right direction in protecting the quality of the food on our plates and our farmers.
Here’s a summary of what’s changed:
The newly formed Trade and Agriculture Commission - a group set up to advise the government on how trade will affect our farmers and the food we eat - has been given legal status. This means its recommendations will hold more sway. [2]
The Commission will be required to produce a report to MPs on how any new trade deal will affect our food and animal welfare standards. This will arm MPs with more information to decide whether to debate or even block any trade deals that threaten these things. [3]
The government has vowed not to 'negotiate to remove that ban [on chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef] in a trade deal' - however they haven’t yet backed this up with legal protections. [4]
By working together in our hundreds of thousands, we were able to get the government to introduce better protections for our food and animal welfare standards. So I wanted to take a moment to celebrate all of the work we’ve done together to help make this happen:
Hundreds of thousands of us signed petitions and open letters to Boris Johnson and key government ministers telling them to protect our food and animal welfare standards in trade deals with countries like the USA [5]
Tens of thousands of us got in touch with our MPs, telling them to show up to important votes in Parliament and vote to support protections in law
Thousands of us chipped in for a legal briefing to MPs proving why our food and animal welfare standards are at risk
We paid for digital ad campaigns in major newspapers telling Boris Johnson not to break his promise to ban chlorinated chicken in trade deals
Together our pressure forced 4 major UK supermarket chains - Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Asda and the Coop - to ban chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef from their stores [6]
This news is a positive sign the government is listening to the concerns of the public: of 38 Degrees members like you, farmers, consumer and agricultural groups, and food experts who've all been working to make sure our food and animal welfare standards are properly protected in trade deals.
We'll still need to be on the lookout: to make sure that our farmers will never be undercut by lower quality imported food, and products like chicken dunked in chlorine never end up in our supermarkets, because of each new trade deal. But I'm proud of what we've achieved together so far - and I hope you are too.

Is it a question of supermarkets offering price below price producing the goods? or is there a shortage.

International Day for Tolerance Date in the current year: November 16, 2020
International Day for ToleranceInternational Day for Tolerance is a United Nations observance held on November 16. It was officially established by UNESCO in 1995 to raise awareness of the dangers of intolerance. In 1996, the UN General Assembly invited the Member States to observe the day.
The date was chosen to commemorate the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance issued by UNESCO on November 16, 1995. Besides, the Constitution of UNESCO was introduced and signed on this day in 1945. The Declaration states that tolerance is neither indifference no indulgence. Tolerance means respecting and appreciating the rich variety of the world's cultures, forms of expression and ways of being human.
People of the world are naturally diverse, and tolerance is the only way to ensure the survival of mixed communities across the globe. Tolerance lies in recognition of the fundamental freedoms and universal human rights. Not only is it a moral duty but also a political and legal requirement for states, groups and individuals.
International Day for Tolerance is marked with numerous events aimed to educate people about tolerance and raise awareness of the importance of fighting intolerance. According to UNESCO, fighting intolerance requires law, education, access to information, individual awareness, and local solutions. -
