1957 was a bit of a pivotal year. It started with established artists such as Guy Mitchell, Frankie Vaughan and Johnnie Ray doing well but ended with the new rock 'n' roll stars taking over. Biggest hit of the year was Paul Anka's Diana - a song he wrote and recorded when only 16 years old. And he's still going strong. What a great song this was.

1955 - Early rock-n-rollers coming on the scene but charts still dominated by the popular music as exemplified by Dickie Valentine who started the year at No 1 with Finger of Suspicion. He was killed in a car crash in Wale in 1971 at the age of 41. Anyone remember this one?

In 1954 Johnnie Ray made No 1 in the UK charts with a song that was banned by the BBC and a hit in the 60s for Elvis - Such a night. In my opinion, Johnnie Ray was the first pop star - he wrote a lot of his own songs including Cry which pre-dated UK charts in 1951 and the ladies all screamed for him at concerts. Were you one of the screamers ladies?

THE Hit song of 1953 was undoubtedly I Believe by Frankie Laine. In total, it spent 18 weeks in the No 1 spot in the UK charts. I'm sure everyone will know the song. He was another of those American-Italian singers - real name Francesco Paolo LoVecchio.
There have been many versions of I Believe including by The Bachelors and Robson and Jerome but do any of them better Frankie Laine?
