Washing at 30 degrees - does it really save money

When I had the smart meters installed I got given the energy saving tips leaflet. One piece of advice is to wash clothes at 30 degrees. So I tried it today.
Normally I use the mixed load setting which is 40 degrees and starts with 1 hour 5 minutes on the clock but really takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Today on the 30 degree setting the clock started at 1 hour 40 minutes but actually took 2 hours to complete.
So which one really saved me money, or do they cancel out?
