Asda brings back £1 rule for shoppers and it'll last until February
From birminghammail.co.uk
James Rodger
Asda has "brought back" a £1 rule for shoppers as we head through winter and towards Christmas. Asda, which is rivalled by Sainsbury's, Lidl, Morrisons, Aldi, Tesco and more, has brought back its soup, roll and unlimited Tea and Coffee deal for just £1 until end of February.
There are three soup flavours to choose from (Tomato, Chicken or Vegetable) with 60,000 meals sold in the first two weeks of launch. The retailer encouraging social interaction as one in 10 over 60’s said they’d gone to a supermarket simply to speak to another person.
McEvans, Asda’s Commercial Vice President Fresh and Frozen said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.
"We’ve already served 60,000 meals to the over 60’s in the first two weeks, and since its launch 1.2 million meals have been sold showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back for 2024 and extending it until February we hope it will prove just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most.”
This comes as Asda's new Christmas Community Report highlights the lack of interaction many older people experience during the festive period. According to the report, one in 10 people over 60 had gone to a supermarket simply to speak to another person.
Last Christmas, 17 per cent said there were days when they didn’t speak to a single person, and from mid-December to the end of the year, 15 per cent said they got used to not conversing with other people. The retailer launched Winter Warmers in November 2022 for two months.
It aimed to help older customers hit hardest by rising living costs. -
Think very carefully before buying vouchers as presents - remember the ever growing list of big company closures. You can use money anywhere - as long as it doesn't say 'Credit Cards only'!
Someone I know paid for a large order with Homebase, and the next day they went in to administration. Amazingly they have received a refund. -
If you use it, is it worth the risk?

The Co-operative Bank and Coventry Building Society
Following on from the agreement of non-binding heads of terms in April, we have today announced that Coventry Building Society and six of The Co-operative Bank Holdings’ major owners have signed a share purchase agreement under which the Society will acquire the entire issued share capital of the Bank.
The acquisition is subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions and approval from both the PRA and FCA. The acquisition is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2025, and the Bank will continue to operate as a separate business for some time after completion.
There is no impact to your bank products or services and no changes to FSCS deposit protections. We will keep you informed if anything changes.
This is an exciting time and our combined businesses will provide wider products, value and service and we look forward to being a strong combined business. Both businesses share a powerful mutual/co-operative heritage which is increasingly relevant in modern society and crucially, a strong reason why you provide the Bank with your custom.
I am very proud of the Bank’s success and achievements over the last few years – we are now stable, profitable and resilient. I sincerely thank you, our loyal customers for your support, without which this would not be possible.
We’ll keep our website up to date with the latest news and our teams are as committed as ever to delivering great service to you.
We will be providing FAQs on our website shortly and we’ll keep updating this page.
Thank you again for your continued loyalty.

Amazing revelation by the Express
'Premium Bonds have been scrutinised as the lottery-style savings option means more wealthy Britons who can afford to leave larger amounts deposited stand a better chance of winning.
Provider NS&I is often contacted by frustrated customers who have won nothing in decades. But the reality is it's not the length of time that is the key factor in boosting your chance of taking home a prize, but how many Bonds you hold.' -

Just spotted that I have some (had no idea about them) on Microsoft Edge. They are shown at the top right hand corner of a new tab. Once you've collected enough you can exchange for electronic gift cards.

I was wondering about making a haybox (the modern version, with polystyrene block insulation rather than literally using hay) to help economise on cooking time when I heard on the radio earlier about this ingenious fabric equivalent: the Wonderbag. It's rather like an old-fashioned tea-cosy for a casserole dish, except with insulation on the underneath too.
One can buy the original Wonderbag from https://www.wonderbagworld.com/, who apparently then donate one to a family in the developing world. Or make one's own; although reinventing the shape would be a trick, without one to copy, Amazon gives the product dimensions as 38D x 38W x 20H centimetres.
Some sewers' groups have also apparently begun making their own, priced for somewhat less, so it might be worth looking around if you like the idea but can't sew your own. -
I purchased a heated throw and have seen a marked reduction in my energy bills since using this. I'm now always toasty warm and a firm believer that we should follow Martin Lewis' tip of 'heat the person not the home'. I have one for each room and enjoy sitting wrapped up, enjoying a nice bottle of wine and fine cheese, which I purchase easily from some of the savings I make!
