    Reminiscing - 1978

Do you remember all the concern over the safety of the Whooping Cough vaccine. We did not get our first son vaccinated because of it and in 1978 he caught it and then so did I. I can testify that it is an awful disease - waking in the middle of the night and trying to get breathe only to feel as if you were sucking in a balloon that prevented the air reaching your lungs.

On to brighter things, hits of the year included:

    - Boney M Rivers Of Babylon / Brown Girl In The Rin
    - The Bee Gees Night Fever
    - Kate Bush Wuthering Heights
    - Blondie Denis

    ..and this enormous hit..

    Events of 1978:

    - Gordon McQueen, 25-year-old Scotland central defender, became Britain's first £500,000 footballer in a transfer from Leeds United to Manchester United.

    - First official naturist beach opened at Fairlight Glen in Covehurst Bay near Hastings

    - Charlie Chaplin's coffin, stolen 11 weeks previously, wais found in a field about a mile away from the Chaplin home in Corsier near Lausanne, Switzerland

    - The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Evita opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London

    - A baker's strike led to panic buying of bread

    - The Labour minority government of James Callaghan survived a vote of confidence

Do you have any particular memories of 1978?
