Details
An opportunity to see the beautiful art collection which ING has in the UK. This includes modern British artists such as Stanley Spencer, LS Lowry, John Minton and Keith Vaughan
There are also 18th and 19th century watercolours by artists such as Samuel Palmer, Edward Lear and Peter de Wint, and a collection of historical portraits that illustrate the story of Baring Brothers, which was acquired by ING in 1995, and the Baring Archive that dates back to 1762.
The landscape and buildings collection contains watercolours by George White, a senior clerk of Barings, views of Baring homes and offices, and even a watercolour by a member of the Baring family
The portrait collection contains pictures of members of the Baring family who played a leading role in the history of the firm, as well as portraits of other partners
The miscellaneous group of pictures includes items such as images of sailing ships owned by Barings
Barings Bank was a British merchant bank based in London, and the world's second oldest merchant bank (after Berenberg Bank). It was founded in 1762 by Francis Baring, , a British-born member of the German-British Baring family of merchants and bankers
The bank collapsed in 1995 after suffering losses of £827 million resulting from poor speculative investments, primarily in futures contracts, conducted by its employee Nick Leeson, working at its office in Singapore. The story, as you would expect was, in 1999 turned into a film called ‘Rogue Trader’ starring Ewan McGregor
The Dutch bank ING, purchased Barings Bank in 1995 for the nominal sum of £1. The purchase included Barings extensive art collection and historical documents going back to its formation in 1762.
We will enjoy a short introduction to the collection and its origins, before viewing some of the highlights.
