Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir is full of vitality, beautiful harmonics and passion. His individual style was inspired by Bach, French impressionism and Renaissance music, with the influence of plainsong woven throughout. The Mass was written in the 1920’s although the composer did not allow it to be performed until 1963.
Duruflé’s lovely Quatre Motets were written in 1960 and are based on Gregorian chant. Dupré was known as a veritable virtuoso of the organ; in fact Widor claimed that some of his earlier pieces were too difficult to play! Dupré’s Quatre Motets were composed in 1916.
