    More Police is Excellent News

Part 5 - Kingston Town Centre and University

In the vicinity of Kingston University, we saw a disproportionate number of reports of Anti Social Behaviour (ASB) reported to both the police and Kingston Council.

Noting the significant detrimental impact, PC Matt Cefai set about addressing this. After 18 months of meetings, research, vetting and training, PC Matt Cefai succeeded in having Kingston University security accredited with legal powers to address ASB under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS).

The implementation of the scheme has allowed security staff to patrol beyond the Halls of residence and has given them powers to:
    1. Request name and address of a person acting in an anti-social manner
    2. Request name and address of offences that cause injury, alarm and distress
    3. Require persons under 18 to surrender alcohol
    4. Deal with begging
    5. Stop cycles

Over the course of 2 years, security officers have made 365 interventions in this type of ASB and as a result, there has been a 95.5% reduction in ASB related calls linked to this location.

This has freed up police resource to deal with crime and most importantly, hopefully enhanced quality of life for those in the area.
