World Heart Beat alumni Karen Shiraishi is a pianist, composer and arranger born and raised in London, England. She was classically trained from a young age and fell in love with jazz at age 14.
Whilst at World Heart Beat, in 2015, she was one of two exceptional students to be chosen by the Grammy Panel to attend Grammy Camp LA with full scholarship, through our partnership with Gucci Timepieces and Jewellery.
She was mentored by Julian Joseph OBE, Trevor Watkis, Tony Kofi and Byron Wallen during her teen years, and in 2017 was accepted into the prestigious Berklee College of Music on a substantial scholarship.
At Berklee she currently studies with jazz greats including NEA Jazz Master Joanne Brackeen, Ralph Peterson, Terri Lyne Carrington and Tia Fuller. She has performed at many venues across London as well as across the globe.
In 2019, she performed at Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland as part of Terri Lyne Carrington's Jazz and Gender Justice Institute, DC Jazz Festival and Dizzy's Jazz Club NY as part of Ralph Peterson's GenNext Big Band, and at the Novosibirsk Jazz Festival in Russia.
For this concert, Karen will be joined by World Heart Beat affiliated musicians Jas Kayser (drums), Ezekiel Ajie (bass) with guests James Wade-Sired (trombone) and Ava Joseph (voice) to perform her original music along with some of her favourite jazz standards.
This concert has been produced by World Heart Beat and Yokohama Calling, a producer of collaborative arts events, specialising in raising awareness of Japanese musicians to a wider audience.
The concert will also be taking part in the British Council’s ‘#CultureConnectsUs’ online festival website, which brings diverse and vibrant work by UK artists and cultural institutions to audiences in Japan digitally.
The concert is FREE, but any donations via https://ko-fi.com are welcome!
