Ipad texting HELP please

I have iphone 4s and iPad 11.2.6. Not sure what happened or when but it seems I can no longer send texts on iPad to a number of my contacts. names/numbers are coming up in red, and it says not on iMessage this is a fairly recent change. What can I do to amend this please?
