    Heatwave, dust & computers

The heat is ON! Higher temperatures affect living things and electronics alike. You may find that your computers are making more noise as they try to cool themselves and/or seem particularly slow when rooms they are in get hot. The main culprit is dust and it affects both PCs and Apple Macs. Small fans with small cooler grills get clogged up even in generally clean environments and much more so in dusty and places where people smoke (tar is sticky). Hottest components like processors don't die in a puff of smoke these days thanks to sophisticated techniques that make them run slower and a little cooler. However running slow is what we don't want to see in computers.
Long story short. If you are confident with steady hands then get inside and clean that dust. Vacuum cleaners are less effective and harder to handle. Compressed air works best but don't allow fans to pickup high speeds by gently holding them back, as fast spins can generate electricity inside them and burn out fan controls.
If you are not so confident then get in touch with your favourite IT person contact and ask them to help.
Those who don't have one are welcome to get in touch with me.
