Catalytic Converters
There has been a sharp increase in the number of catalytic converter thefts in the last year due to the value of the metals contained within them. Thefts are occurring at all times of the day and night frequently by gangs who’ll work together to remove them. A Catalytic Converter can be removed in under 2 minutes and repairs can cost upwards of a £1000. Hybrid models are particularly targeted.
As your local Amersham Neighbourhood Sergeant I am looking at ways in which the community can fight back and your help is needed to protect our communities from these criminals.
If you see something suspicious going on call it in. Additional patrols have been put in place at hotspot areas. Metal dealers have also been targeted and other areas and forces are co-ordinating a joint response to this.
Crime Reduction techniques also have a part to play. Consider where and how you park. Maybe it is time to actually use that garage (If the car will fit in it). Park close to the kerb, or in a location that restricts access underneath. Get your cat converter marked up
Last week 18 MOT stations in Chesham, Amersham, Prestwood, Hyde Heath, Coleshill, Gt Missenden, Penn and Holmer Green signed up to a new pilot scheme to mark identified targeted vehicles catalytic converters.
Toyota are also supporting SMART-Water marking schemes, which I will be taking full advantage of, and arranging events in areas that have been particularly targeted.
Unfortunately there are only a limited amount of kits so it will be a case of first come first served. Garages may charge an admin fee for the application of the kits and use of their ramps. These kits will leave SMARTWATER residue on the converters and tools that were used to remove them which can be traced back to the original vehicle.
This will assist the Police in identifying stolen property and bringing offenders to justice.
Keep those eyes peeled and stay safe
