You may be aware of a recent planning application for a development on the site of the old Maplin site for a 12-storey retail/residential unit. As the Ward Councillors we opposed the scheme on the grounds of its design and height and persuaded the planning committee to reject it on that basis.
We have heard today that a new application for a much higher, bulkier and uglier block has been submitted by the same applicant on the same site. It's hugely disappointing that the applicant has chosen not to take on board any of our feedback while coming up with this new proposal and we will be strongly opposing.
There are a number of developments in the town centre that demonstrate you can build quality housing without destroying the feel of our historic town centre - but this is not one.
