Musically, 1969 was the year that a number of lead singers left their groups to form super groups. Most lasted only briefly such as:
- Blind Faith (Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker)
- Humble Pie (Steve Marriott, Peter Frampton)
One that lasted a bit longer was Crosby Stills and Nash (later and Young).
But for me 1969 stands out as the year that Creedence Clearwater Revival burst on the scene with Proud Mary. And as the year that Crystal Palace FC made it to the top League for the first time.
Films in 1969:
- (my favourite film of all time) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
- Midnight Cowboy
- Alice's Restaurant
- Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Any favourites of yours from that year?

1968 was a bit of an in-between year musically. The biggest UK hit was Mary Hopkins' Those were the days. It was the year when it became acceptable to have singles over 5/6 minutes long - most successfuly McArthur Park by Richard Harris and Eloise by Barry Ryan (featured below). Paul and Barry Ryan were twins and their mother was Marian Ryan who those of us of greater years will remember from Spot the tune on TV. Paul Ryan wrote Eloise as well as I will drink the wine by Frank Sinatra. He died of lung cancer aged 44 - Barry is still around now aged 70.
Films of 1968:
- Bullitt
- Rosemary's baby
- Planet of the apes
