  • Sassandra, The Undiscovered Jewel of Côte d’Ivoire

Welcome to the Southern town of Sassandra, which is 6 hours drive from Abidjan, the capital city of Côte d’Ivoire. You are probably asking yourself what we are doing in this sleepy town?

Well, behind the quietness of this place, Sassandra is an unexploited resort town with its sandy beaches, palm-trees forest and quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Beside the beaches and the palm-trees forest, there are many historical treasures waiting to be discovered.

So where shall we start? Do you know that the first ever concrete bridge in West Africa was built in Sassandra? Well, it is Le Pont Weygand. This arc bridge, leading to the island of Gaoulou, was built around 1940. Its name, comes from that of General Weygand, a colonial administrator. It has the same historical importance as the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol; unfortunately, it is little known to most Ivorians and even to myself until last summer.

Located a few minutes drive from the city, it offers besides its architecture, a beautiful view of the river. If you ever cross the bridge, please keep your eyes peeled for hippos peeking out of the river.

Do you also know that during the Second World War, a British passenger and cargo ship sunk off the coast of Sassandra? Eh oui!!! The English ship, the S.S. Dumanawas torpedoed on the 25 December 1943 off the coast of Sassandra by the German submarine U-515.A war memorial monument has been erected in memory of the six victims.

What else is hidden in Sassandra? We have the vestiges of one of the biggest banks of the West Africa of the colonial era. In 1901, the BAO (la Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale), the Bank of West Africa was created for all the territories owned or protected by France outside Europe. There was one branch in Saint-Louis in Senegal and another one in Sassandra. The BAO was closed when the forced labour was abolished in all French colonies. Nowadays, the French colon is gone but the building of the BAO is still standing!!

  • A truly authentic African shopping experience!

Have you ever been to a market where you can get easily lost?

If the answer is yes, we will make it relive the trip. If it is no, well get ready to get lost in the noise, the heat and the colour. In any case, we guarantee that you will love it, all you need is a bottle of water.

The Grand Marché de Lomé is one of the biggest and the liveliest market of West Africa and the economic heart of the country after the Autonomous Port of Lomé. Women in colourful traditional outfits lead most of the trade and their children help them. It is a beautiful sight to see some of the women carrying stuff on their heads, babies on their back. Most of the goods sold there are from China and Europe.

As you get closer to the market, it looks like chaos at first sight - as the indoor market and all the surrounding streets overflow with vendors selling everything imaginable - but you are entering a vibrant place full of colour. Stay alert as the sellers, the shoppers and the “Zemidians” - taxi-motors - dropping or picking up their clients, use the streets around the market. Traders will offer you their goods by calling you "my friend". If you like to bargain, you will enjoy the shopping trip as the traders expect clients to do so. It is best to choose several items and bargain the overall price.

  • The Akwasidae Celebration

We are taking you today to the South-Centre of Ghana, to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region and the seat of the Ashanti Kingdom. Kumasi is the site of West Africa's largest cultural centre, the Manhyia Palace.

The Manhyia Palace, also known asas Asantehene's (King) Palaceis the seat of the King of Ashanti, OtumfuoOsei Tutu II and members of the royal family where the Akwasidae takes place.

The Akwasidae celebration is part of the Adae festival, celebrated on a Sunday of every 6 weeks in Kumasi by the Ashanti people. It is very important to the Ashanti people because it commemorates the date that the Ashanti Golden Stools, the symbol of the Ashanti kingdom, was magically brought down from heaven.

Very early in the morning, the Queen Mother will go with the elders to the King's palace to greet him and wish him well. The first part of the ceremony really starts in the mausoleum where rituals take place in the presence of the King and the initiates in order to pay homage to the dead kings: Libations, mashed yams and a slaughtered sheep are offered ; also strong liquors and the blood of the sheep are poured over the thrones of the dead ancestors.
